Refurb Dumb Phones from HK/China Opinions

My 11 year old dumb phone has finally stopped working. I bought a new 3310 as a replacement but it's terrible. Has anyone bought one of the many refurbished dumb phones available on ebay?

example,

Some of the feedback scores are not encouraging. I need gsm 900/2100. Are these phones genuine?
Thanks.

Why do you need a refurbished dumb phone from overseas?

Why not just buy brand new one locally? You can easily and very cheaply get a prepaid package here.

    • Exactly, I bought a SMART phone for $26 from Woolworths (thanks OzB, combined with 5% off discount gift card from Cashrewards!) - it was a Windows Mobile but i've been using it for over a year fine, it has internet and emails and phone… … ok its not the greatest phone out there, but hell… it was $26!!

      • I don't want to share my data with google/apple/microsoft.

        • But you happy to share with Google?

        • @Elektrikrevamp:
          How so?

        • You can completely de-Google your phone

          1. Flash Lineage OS (also used to be known as CyanogenMod)
          2. Don't install Google Apps Package
          3. Don't create a Google account. Or any account, for that matter.
          4. Only side load apps from F-Droid, which is a Free and Open Source repository of Android apps.
        • @scrimshaw:
I was not aware of this(out of the loop mobile wise). This may be an option. Thankyou.

    • Why not just buy brand new one locally?

I did. Read my comment. I thought an older higher end phone may have a less annoying menu, better camera, better build etc.

      • The Nokia you linked to runs Symbian S40, if you've ever used Nokia in the 2010's the UI is pretty much navigated using the D-Pad, there's no QWERTY so everything that you type is in the very, very slow T9 keypad. I have a similar Nokia (6288, then later the 6500).

They are very chunky, heavy phones, puts an uncomfortable bulge in your pocket, the slider action is cool if you live in the year 2009 and fun to play with if you've never experienced a fidget spinner.
battery life will be degraded. Most old lithium cells more than 6+ years old will have more than 50 percent wear (half capacity)

I really don't recommend any sort of T9-keypad based phone as a daily driver, unless you're really good at writing with predictive text input on the keypad.

There are 4G dumbphones by the way. The ZTE Flip 2 T21 is a Blue-Tick phone made for Telstra and you can buy it unlocked from ebay around $140 or so dollars.

        • Thanks for info. I don't use predictive text, just do multi tap.

      • There's so many different options here. Think you just need to work out what features and functions are important to you before you go out and buy your next phone.

  • Billions now share their data with Google with no pain so why the phobia?
Many great cheap basic smart phones available at your local grocery store… be daring.

  • Got the Alcatel Pixi First unlocked from Australia Post for $59 recently for my mum. If you don't want to share data with Google, turn the wifi off (saves battery too).

PS: you might want to reassess your phobia. A girl at work didn't want to use flybuys or wowrewards because she didn't want to share data with the supermarkets!!!

    • I don't have the phobia but, believe me, they know your data. My flybuys tells me when the products I purchase regularly go on special at the supermarket.

This story is probably apocryphal but it wouldn't surprise me if it was true.

      • Not apocryphal - that's how Amazon and other businesses recommend products to you based on the other products in the basket of customers who bought the same/similar things to you.

What I'm trying to say to the OP is no business cares if he buys women's undies or vice versa. It's just the algorithms being run over a large volume of data collected. But to try to stay off the grid from big data and sacrifice flybuys and wowrewards, etc., because of it, is a big waste. But to each their own.

        • Don't disagree, which is why I have Flybuys etc. Just pointing out that they can track your purchasing pretty comprehensively. If big business, and the Government, decided to track me they must be VERY bored by now. However, I might take a different view of this if I was living in North Korea, China or Russia.
