  • Just because they aren't charging GST doesn't mean you won't have to pay it.

    • From the research i've done (and someone can correct me if I'm wrong),
It's only being enforced if it's charged by the seller at the time of purchase.
I couldn't see it mentioned anywhere at time of purchase.
Edit: It appears to be vendor enforced only if its <$1000.
If it's >$1000 the regular customs clearance is enforced at the border.

That's how I read it too

There is no mechanism to collect GST on orders under $1000 at the border, Auspost, etc

        • This is correct. The Government have put the onus on the retailer to set up the mechanism to charge GST.
This is why Amazon won't let us use their US site anymore.
They didn't want to make their US site GST compliant.
I bought some cologne from Strawberry net last week and they charged GST.
If GST isn't mentioned in the itemised charges- it's very likely not charged to the buyer.
Finally, Brickell actually say they won't charge any local taxes relating to the destination.
It's up to the buyer to pay those taxes and as this isn't being picked up at the border, you won't be charged. I'm guessing it's not cost-effective to police items under $1k.
