TRS Date - Purchase Date or Tax Invoice Date?

I purchased a laptop from Dell ebay on the 8 May. Dell have sent me an Order Confirmation with that date on it.

They then sent me a tax invoice for that item a week later. The invoice has an 'Invoice Date' of 18 May, and a 'Delivery/Service Date' of 16 May. There is no mention of the purchase date on the Tax Invoice. The TRS website says that you need a Tax Invoice to claim GST back (https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/FAQs/Pages/what-is-a-valid-ta…).

However the FAQ says that the 60 days starts the day after you purchased the item https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/FAQs/Pages/When-does-the-60-d…

Which date applies to calculate the 60 day TRS window? I assumed that it is the tax invoice date since you have to present a tax invoice when trying to claim it, but was a bit confused after reading that FAQ.

Tax invoice, no questions will be asked.

  • Perhaps you could consider it that on the 8th you made a request via ebay to purchase a laptop, but the purchase didn't actually take place until they acknowledged it and gave you a tax invoice?
