Postman Broke The Letterbox - Have CCTV Footage

Hi fellow bargainers,

Few months back, a postman broke my letterbox and left it on the street. The letterbox was not left in a condition where it can be repaired. I have contacted AusPost on their Facebook page a number of times and they say that someone will contact from the local post office - but that never happened. I have shared the photos and cctv footage to prove the fact that it was a postman who broke the letterbox.

I have now replaced the letterbox which costed me $100. Should I just forget this matter or what do you guys suggest I should do with regards to this matter.

Thanks

Make sure it's hand drawn with paint

      • Either paint, or written in the posties blood , depending on how soon the OP gets another postal delivery

    • +22

The postie is really pushing the envelope this time.

      • +1

oh my ….gold class pun…i cant believe you dont have more votes?
your talents are wasted on these plebs… :D

  • +7

Interested to see what condition your letterbox was in before the postman came along.

  • +2

……how did they break a letterbox……..I assume they don't bring a hammer around on their delivery runs.

    • +1

Well, they didnt bring hammer - but my understanding is that it got caught by the bulky bag on his motorbike and got pulled from wooden frame and dis-formed and irreparable.

        • +13

Just like the post-office shouldn't be a dick about not fixing it?

        • +6

It really doesn't matter if it's an accident or not - they broke it, they should pay for it. They also drove off without letting OP know how it was going to be compensated, and that is a dick move already. It's not like OP's asking for their head.

        • @Kangal:

Just like the post-office shouldn't be a dick about not fixing it?

the lpo isn't liable for the damage. op have to lodge a claim directly against ap.

        • @whooah1979:

I have contacted AusPost on their Facebook page a number of times and they say that someone will contact from the local post office

          That's exactly what OP did.

        • @spawnlaeer:

lpo aren't liable for alleged damages that may have been caused by ap employees. op should contact ap directly.
          https://auspost.com.au/about-us/corporate-information/compla…

        • If you think OP is being a dick have I got news for you…

      • +2

Perhaps OP should send the postie a letter of complaint.

  • +28

I'd move on. You want to keep on good terms with your postie. Just ensure the new one is properly secured this time

    • +3

Agree, If you want to continuing getting your mail on time.

      • +2

        Or at all,

        • C'mon people hardly get their mail these days, let alone "on-time".
The competing courier services are killing it in the major cities, because, I don't know maybe they won't get paid otherwise?

    • Agreed, the week after my wife complained about our postie my next parcel had a card left, went to pick it up the next day, they couldn't find it, so I went back into tracking and it was shipped back to a depot 40 minutes away and didn't come back for 2 weeks.

(Complaint was about delivering my packages to the neighbour's house 3 times in a month)

      • well that is pretty sad. quite useless ausPost, I must say.

      • So you complain again.
        And again.
And you go to the postal ombudsman.
If you lie down and just take it what the hell do you expect to happen? You expect it to get better?

  • +7

Well, your video didn't show anything……..and how come they're set up across the road…..

Anyways, that glued on alfoil box prob costs 10 dollars max.

    • The videos are from front door neighbour.

If you look at the LEFT side video - the postman first stopped at previous property between 12:50:16 - 12:50:22 and then moved to our property.
Then if you look at the RIGHT side video - the postman appeared from the letterbox side on 12:50:30 after dropping the letter and hitting the letterbox.

Since the neighbour's camera are pointing sideways from his house - it did not get him making the direct hit. But then he stopped and went back leaving his motorbike on our driveway - and came back around 12:51:11 after keeping the postbox on side.

      • +14

it did not get him making the direct hit

When I thought this couldn't get any worse…

Let's recap. You illegally fixed your mailbox perilously close to the footpath, which creates a hazard to the posties as it protrudes out. This nearly took a postie off his motorcycle as it latched onto the bag on it while he was doing his job. But thankfully it was cheap crap that came off when the motorcycle moved, so nobody was injured. And then you come out in public asking us to figure out how could you get money from Auspost.

If I were you, I'd quit complaining immediately and quietly replace the tacky letterbox that broke with something of better quality, and make sure that it gets installed legally within the property limits. And I'd be thankful the original one was tacky, so it did not injure the postman. I'd also trim the plant that's occupying over half of the footpath as it causes a serious hazard for posties, people walking especially in the night, and those who may be using a wheelchair, a trolley, etc.

If I saw someone negligent enough to create hazards like this, I'd be reporting them to the council. Be glad your address isn't known, and fix everything pointed out, because your mere existence need not necessarily create problems for the rest of the population.

  • +27

The letterbox as it was, well it was a safety hazard. they could have injured the postie or worse damaged the bike. When putting in letter boxes they must not go over the footpath. I would forget about it

  • Move on

  • +1

The same happened to me, the bag on the side of the motorbike caught on the letterbox and pulled it.
Being a concrete letterbox it broke in to many pieces when falling to the ground. The postie did turn around and put the pieces back together as best he could.

I contacted auspost via their website and submitted the footage I had. A day or two later the delivery manager emailed me to ask for a quote on replacement. I sent him a link to the product at Bunnings and he offered to meet there so he could pay for it.

    Try this page https://auspost.com.au/about-us/corporate-information/compla…

I submitted my ticket through my MyPost account, there wasn’t a category that suited but I just selected the closest and was surprised they read it so quick.

and he offered to meet there so he could pay for it.

Wow! Gotta admit I'm quite impressed with the "human" service!

it does protrude into the path….

Ozbargain really seems to have it in for Australia Post this weekend

  • How can i open the .264 video format?

    Check out:
The elevation of the letterbox slot should
be between 900 mm and 1200 mm above
    the ground

  • +13

Maybe they will ask you to replace the damaged post bag your unsafe letter box caused?

  • +19

It's quite clear from the photos that your letterbox actually crossed the line into the footpath making it a potential hazard. In theory, I think the postie would have a better argument to claim damage to his bike from you, than vise versa.

I'd replace it with one that goes through the wood and has the mail receptacle on the rear of the panel.

  • +4

    Move on with your life.

  • +10

OMG Leave the postman alone and just get on with life.
He is just doing his job

  • +1

My old postman actually returned mine when it was stolen. The new one can't read and always delivers the same number's mail from the next street over and vice versa.

  • +5

The letterbox in the images looks to be installed outside of your property boundary. Could you please confirm if it was installed beyond the water main alignment?

Edit. Nvm. Google maps shows that your letterbox is ~0.7mbl. You may want to move it inside your boundary before someone reports this to your council.

  • +1

100 bucks is not worth the stress. It was an accident on the part of the postie. Forget it and move on.

  • +4

Ha! $100 for that glorified tin can? It's a good try but I don't think they're going to be willing to reimburse you for the much much better box you went out and bought to replace the one you originally had. Personally if it was me I'd just be disappointed that the mailbox was so easily broken, and quietly/shamefully upgrade it.

  • I have contacted AusPost on their Facebook page a number of times

How about you know…. Go into a post office or contact them via the contact pages on auspost.com.au

But at the end of the day, its 50/50, your mailbox looks to be over hanging the footpath and the postie also caused damage.

Sometimes sh!t happens and you just have to deal with it.

Its better to pay $100 for a new mailbox than have auspost causing you for damage to its postie ;)

I don't see why people are saying to just forget it and move on? It is accidental damage, but damage nonetheless. A normal human being would be sorry for the incident and offer to remedy the situation.

    • You know what 'accidental damage' means right?

  • +1

My simple rules in life: you dont piss off the people handling your food and your local postman.

    Move on with your life

    • +5

I don't want the people handling my food handling my local postman either. Not even if they wear gloves. lol

      • +2

My mum handles my food. I’m not sure how her relationship with the postie is though.

  • +4

Be nice to your post man… because when you control mail, you control information!

  • Few months back….

    Fix it and move on.

  • I hope the letterbox you replaced it with was designed better… These cheap chinese letterboxes are built like shit and focus on aesthetics over functionality.

  • +5

You could trim that plant you have sticking more than half way out onto the footpath while you're fixing your letterbox - which also sticks out.

    (Broken Letterbox 1.jpg)

  • +3

Postman don't giva!@#$, they the real bikies.

  • +3

Letterbox and plant over footpath are a hazard.

  • +4

Go on A Current Affair this is the perfect news story for them.

  • I hate Aus post for their shit service. Just had to wait 30 mins on queue because they were under staffed and taking too much time socialising and hate it when postie just drops the slip without pressing the buzzer, but complaining on Oz bargain for broken post when your post in right on the foot path is ridiculous. Hope the postie read this and breaks the new box if it's still on footpath.

    • Is English your first language?

  • It looks like it would stick out over the footpath. Why is it so close?

  • one could argue that the box wasnt screwed in securely and was only a matter of time before it fell/dented.

just move on… like others said - you wanna keep on good terms with the postie.

  • +2

    Thanks all for your comments..

    Few things
    - I didn't install the original letterbox myself - it was there for 11 years since the property was built. It was properly screwed not hanging or anything before. If it was hazardous - the accident would not have waited for 11 years when postie comes there every day and drops mail every other day. However, I have been cautious when I bought the new one which is much slimmer.
    - I believe that postie's bag was much more bulkier than usual or he skid his bike or something, which made his bag or bike tangled with the letterbox and pulled it apart.

Anyways, I have moved on and not gonna be asking anything from Auspost for this incident.

    • If it was hazardous - the accident would not have waited for 11 years when postie comes there every day and drops mail every other day.

Just because you didn't get caught for 11 years doesn't mean you're allowed to continue encroaching public footpath illegally. It's irrelevant that this didn't happen for 11 years, because guess what - it just happened.

I believe that postie's bag was much more bulkier than usual

Should be none of your business, as long as he doesn't ask you to carry it around.

he skid his bike or something, which made his bag or bike tangled with the letterbox and pulled it apart

Yeah, maybe he skid because your letter box was dangerously protruding out onto the footpath.

Anyways, I have moved on and not gonna be asking anything from Auspost for this incident.

Hopefully your new letterbox isn't illegally encroaching public property (isn't very clear from your response). And oh, please do trim that plant that has large, sharp leaves which you've let grow out hazardously onto public property as well.

      • +1

I had to double take on the plant. Wtf. OP Trim that plant its almost taken over the whole width of the foot path!

        • If I lived anywhere near the OP, I'd take a large, LOUD SUV at 2 AM and hoon the hell out right outside the OP's house, and on that plant until no part of that plant encroaches public space.

A chainsaw might be another option to slash up that plant quickly and efficiently so it makes the entire house look UGLY.

He could then take "photographic evidence" of the plant being destroyed and post about it right here asking for his options. Of course, I'd then respond to his post and tell him to move on and be considerate enough not to gobble up public space and/or create hazards for his neighbours.

  • +1

I'm sure Newman would know what to do in this scenario…

  • +2

    Forget about it. I have.

  • Photographic "evidence" that you have endangered an "endangered" species….

  • Beware, the postie bikies might come after you for retribution
