Do you return your plastic waste to the supermarket?

I was pissed off at the bag tax being touted supermarket as saving the environment when they have way more waste from putting bananas in plastic etc! A friend invited me to be part of the campaign to return plastics. They would buy their groceries, refuse to buy any bags then take it to car and unwrap any redundant packaging. They would put groceries in a box in car then return trolley with plastics to store. There are others that have unwrapped it st checkout and left it there.

I read that its probably inspired by the angry Irish supermarkets

Has anyone been doing it?

  • Sounds like you are helping the environment without knowing and could be giving supermarket chains their next marketing initiative

I know Bunnings accepts packaging back (boxes, polystyrene etc) so about time supermarkets did as well

    • Pretty sure my local supermarket would call the police on me. They dont trust customers. I've seen them check every docket of anyone leaving self checkout.

They do have a monopoly in this area.

      • Edit: I misread..

        • What did you edit………?

  • Nope…I chuck it all the bin.

I know!! They are worried about their bags when cars use thousands of times more energy than producing a few bags.

      • That is a overly simplistic way to look at it. It's not just about the energy consumed, it's also about the pollution and negative impact plastic physically causes.

You are right, there is a lot of plastic in cars as well.

@Savas: I like how you recycle by using the same letters twice.

  • you and your mates have to much time on our hands.

    use the red bins.

Yep, but diff councils here have different lists. As my mums 10 minutes away has no plastics in yellow, but food scraps to go in garden waste bin. Whereas I have to throw food scraps in Red. So annoying. I got a red :( sticker from bin audit person for throwing my Polystrene HSP box in the red… but it was pretty contaminated lol.

        Recyclable waste bin (yellow lid)
The following items can be placed in the yellow-lidded bin:
All plastics including cling wrap and plastic bags
        All glass
Plastic bottles (empty with lids off)
        Steel and aluminum cans
        Aerosols (empty)
        Cardboard, paper, newspapers, magazines
Pizza boxes with food scraps scraped off (if heavily contaminated with oil or food scraps, place in your general waste bin)
        Chip, lolly and pie wrappers
        Aluminum foil.

Please video and share it here when you pour the milk into grocery box and return the milk bottle. I am really interested to see.

After watching War on Waste, our household has gone pretty environmentally responsible. We try to recycle as much as we can add have set up a compost bin. Wife has even gone as far as buying metal straws instead of using plastic straws

    • Unfortunately, for every four or five households who do this, one household in South East Asia, or Africa, or South America, more than makes up for it.

  • Rather than throw away why not keep those plastics for next visit to supermarket. Only you know for sure that plastic is clean to use.

    • Did… did you read the OP? They're talking about the packaging on supermarket products. What did you want them to do, take the stuff out of the plastic, and put it into their own plastic packaging?

  • +4

Yes, always. My local Coles and Woolies both have "Redcycle" bins out the front which are for the return of single use soft plastics.

  • Packaging in most stores. Is OTT. like those insane blister packs; put the product in a cardboard box or attach a cardboard label. I don’t want to get the scissors out to get to my product.

Also, who the hell wants their knickers on hangers? I leave the hangers at the store.

I refuse to buy fresh fruit and vegetables wrapped in plastic, if everyone does the same they will rot and the supermarket will get the message.

    • I prefer my fruit and vegetables wrapped in plastic. Especially those that I eat without peeling. I don't want people's grubby hands having been all over my fruit and vegetables.

Cucumber amongst others lasts longer wrapped in plastic.

I don't want to purchase loose sliced mushrooms. I prefer to buy them wrapped in plastic.

So my message is wrap them.

      • I don't want to purchase loose sliced mushrooms. I prefer to buy them wrapped in plastic.

        … individually…?

        • You do realise someone has to wrap them, how do you guarantee they have washed their hands? You are better off getting free and then washing them yourself.
