Great price. Mix this with Soda Water for a standard Japanese High Ball.

    • +4

Also great with ginger beer… yum

      • +1

        Soooo nice with ginger beer…

        • +1

Home with the flu - drinking Irish Whiskey with Buderim ginger cordial (higher ginger content) & soda… I feel better now!
Picking up the Kakubin when I feel better (& sober!).

        • @Infidel: Wish there was a Liquorland in Tassie :(

        • @subywagon:
Was going to suggest Dan in Launceston (only TAS store) but no stock😞
Unlikely to have lowered price without local LiquorLand.

Love Tassie, but it misses out on some good deals. Friend in Hobart was complaining about the cold this morning - and I think Brisbane is cold at the moment! Am keeping warm with the Whiskey and Ginger😀

        • With lemon?

    • +1

I remember I used to buy it for 1100 yen at japanese supermarkets… roughly 15 bucks… add instant ramen with free boiled water at 7-11 for a true ozbargain spirit

  • PERFECT! this is my daily, love Japanese whisky. Good for Keto ;)

    • Why is this whisky specifically good for keto?

    • Keto as in diet?

      • +10

        ketomine

      • Spirits like whiskey, vodka, etc don't have carbs so they are allowed in a keto diet. Unlike beer.

        • +2

Isn't alcohol by definition a carb?

        • +2

          @tensionday:
Most spirits are highly distilled (especially white spirits) and results in almost no sugar (close enough to 0). Liquers, Beers, Wines and what you Mix spirits with have carbs and varies generally depending on sweetness.

Upvoted for the Bill Murray quote.

      • -3

        No one mention John Lennon

      • Wut

        • -2

Bill Murray beat his partners. All of his ex's report very similar accusations. He gets a free pass though because the cool kids on Reddit with their hive mind love him.

        • +1

@Joey Jo Jo: I like Bill, he is a good chap.

      • +2

unfortunate, but I still like Ghostbusters despite this

  • +9

Good find, but it's sad to see these deals though because it reminds me how overtaxed our whiskey is here.. I remember seeing this for 900 Yen (~$12) in Japan.

Upvoting for the whiskey though, it's nice.

    • +5

Got a Hibiki 21 last year for $200, retail here is $1500….

      • +6

        hibiki 17 there goes for ~60,000 (~750aud) whilst 21 is 90000
plus tax, i just came back… couldnt' bite the bullet

        • I bought some Hibiki 17 for 13,800yen just last month.
I guess it depends on where you go

      • +1

In Japan? Mind sharing where? I've been looking for any aged yamazaki or hibiki but not finding much luck

    • +25

The excise rate for spirits is $83.84 per litre of alcohol.

This is a 700ml bottle, with 40% alcohol. Therefore, there is 0.28 litres of alcohol per bottle.

Therefore, the excise is $23.48. GST is another $3.67.

So, you're paying $27.15 of taxes on the $40 bottle. Once you remove that, it's $12.85.

Not much markup at all compared to the Japanese price. Just a lot of tax.

      • +2

Just to add to this, the tax on wine (including sake, many ciders, and most fortified wines) is 29% on the wholesale price. This is a hugely lower amount.

So, a true OzBargainer in Australia would avoid spirits, and cultivate an appreciation for wine instead.

        • +2

Except in the NT where they are introducing $1.30 floor price on a standard drink :(

      • +1

That's why @doweyy said it was overtaxed.

        • +3

No argument there. Just pointing out how extremely overtaxed it is.

Still, it's not the most extreme case we've seen. With some of the vodka bargains over the past year, the value of the tax has been more than 90% of the price paid.

        • +3

          @marlor: What isn't overtaxed here?

(politicians brains obviously but what else?)

        • @EightImmortals: True, One cannot be taxed on non-exising things!!! So morals and brains go untaxed :P

        • @OzPunter: …for now.

    • +1

So true. Even $80 bottles of Japanese whiskey is like $10 or $20 over there :(

  • +2

This is like $15 in Japan. This is some crazy mark up.

    • +9

Like on all the booze in Aus.

The tax on this in non-existent in Japan compared to Oz.

2€ Spanish, Italian or French wines are $10+ in here. 5€ European vodka is $30-50 in here.

      • +1

5€ European vodka makes for a good time.

    • +24

      Now there's your problem…
You don't listen to it, you drink it!

    • If you had been a member longer, you would have read how much many Ozbargainers love Japanese Whiskey. I love it!

      • -1

I tried "premium" Chinese Whiskey… almost threw up.
Not sure I would take a gamble with Japanese Whisky after that.

How does it compare to say a standard bourbon (Jim Beam) or a standard scotch (JW Green) ??

        • I have never drunk those so can't answer. And am yet to sample this one. Bought 1 to try.

People generally have particular tastes in Whiskey. I've got a glass of Irish Whiskey in my hand - my "everyday" drink (a reasonable drop at a good price).

This is not premium, but a popular good priced supermarket Whiskey in Japan. You can buy good drops in supermarkets there.

Using the code BONUS for $5 worth of FlyBuys points on your order, it's not a bad price here either.

I love Yamazaki, but that's too expensive here for "everyday" drinking for me.

Others have given their opinions & comparisons to known Whiskey below.

        • @Infidel:
Yeah, I've been to Japan and their import variety and prices are bananas.
I'll skip this one for now… will go through my current stock first.
I might try it in the future.

Though definitely staying away from Chinese Whiskey, it really is disgusting.
But what would I know, I'm just the guy that gets downvoted for saying so.

        • @Kangal:
Hadn't noticed the downvotes. 3 - that's nothing! Without comments, anonymous negs are not worth worrying about.

Taste is very personal. And some people are whiskey snobs😋
Of course some can be very protective towards their homeland… & it's drinks.
And Japanese Whiskey has loyal fans.

Haven't been to Japan for just over a year. Missing it. I don't go there to drink, but to enjoy spending time in nature & rural areas. It can be weeks before I see another Foreigner.

But the deeper I delve into the rich culture over many trips for a decade, the more I question. Japanese rarely question. There are aspects I am uncomfortable with, as people share more with me (often over a whiskey or 3). Drinking loosens the tongue. I have spent very intense times with farmers in tiny villages, and a dying man in Kyoto. It's usually the first time they have confided in any one. The politeness & formal culture can mask some dark aspects.

I am not sure when I will return. So for now, a drink from Japan will have to do

          Enjoy your stockpile🍷
I am yet to pick up my bottle in Brissie.

    • +12

mate, everything the Japanese do is of high quality. They have a long history of being master craftsmen. As the world dawned into the modern era their ancient high standard of craftsmanship branched out into multiple industries. Look at their cars and motorcycles, their beer, their electronics, their homeland infrastructure, their food, their tools, their art, their horticulture. They respect high quality foreign produce and craft their own from without stealing ideas but by respecting others traditions and applying their own masterful craftsmanship to the process. Your comment is ignorant and your ignorance is dishonorable. As someone who enjoys whiskey/whisky I can tell you the Japanese drops are as good as the rest of them.

      • "Japanese drops are as good as the rest of them."

        If not better

        • -2

I have Yamazaki and Hakushu and I dont see what the fuss is. The Japs copied Scotch from the UK so how different can it taste? Never able to tell that much difference.

I still like Chivas just as much. Couldn't in my right mind see myself call one "superior or inferior" unless I'm a snob.

      • +1

Really? Everything they do is of high quality? Have you seen Japanese websites?

        • +1

          You mean like 2chan? Quality.

        • +3

Now that you mention it I've noticed some weird pixelation on japanese video websites…

      • Not everything! Just most…
Now where were those faulty vehicle airbags made?? "We offer our condolences to the those who lost their lives and to those who suffered injuries," Shigehisa Takada, chairman and CEO of Takata

        I'll happily enjoy the Whiskey🍷

        • +4

When you make all the car airbags in the world the odds of yours failing are a lot higher than everyone else's

      • +1

I only drink Japanese whiskeys now. No risk of hangovers.

  • nice, got a few.

  • +4

    Also $40 at Aldi.

    • I thought Aldi didnt stock this permanently ? I got some last time they had on sale thought few months ago

  • +1

I've never tried the blended whisky before, now is obviously Suntory time!

  • +1

Dan Murphy's have now lowered their price to $39.95.

    • still showing as $49.99 for me

      • May be store dependent. Have you set a local store?

      • No DM near me has stock, so price is unchanged @$49.99.

  • +1

    wow pretty horrible C&C rules.
They only hold for 3 days and then refund you.
They also don't allow you to choose a pickup date…

looks like ill wait for the refund.

  • How does this whiskey taste?

FWIW, I'm a bourbon drinker and not a fan of scotch…

    • +2

Like most Japanese whiskey, very smooth, not a lot of peat

Definitely not as sweet as a bourbon, but if you're gonna like a cheap whiskey, Japanese is a good place to start

      • Japanese whisky is made similarly to Scotch in that they use malted barley, not corn or other grains like your bourbons. If you don't like Scotch, chances are you don't like malted barley and thus probably won't like this.

    • This isn't for drinking neat.

This is for making whisky highballs, a hugely popular drink in japan. The box even includes the instructions on how to make it. Highballs are delicious, and a great "first drink of the night" drink IMO.

If you want a straight up drinkable Japanese whisky, look elsewhere.

      • @dekekun disagree, drink this straight almost nightly

  • -2

Add a little iodine to smooth out the rads.

  • Nice

  • +6

1000 FlyBuys bonus points using code BONUS for c&c this week.
Saw in ads at top of Liquorland site
    I'll drink to that😀

    • damn… looks like i gotta buy another bottle.

    • +1

      Nicely spotted!

    • $5 worth of points IS a nice BONUS😉
      *Only 1 use per household

Order was ready to collect within minutes👍

    • Thanks for this. Just ordered for pickup with the code. $35 is pretty good.

      • +1

Yes. Unless you are in Japan where it is so cheap…
Strangely I've never tried it, despite so many Japan trips. Yamazake etc blends there are my choice & not that much dearer.

Will add this to the 5 bottles of Irish Whiskey bought in last week for no more than $35 per 700ml bottle🍷

        • +3

I've been to Japan a few times, I love the premade cans of this you can buy at the convenience stores. They come in both 5% and 8% varieties for the same price.

        • +1

          @jeppetto367:
Thanks - I'll try next trip.

      • Sorry, how did you get it for $35? did you have to convert the points?

I don't have flybuys but would love to get this at $35

        • With FlyBuys there are 1000pts ($5 off future purchase at Coles once you have a total of 2000 points) on any LiquorLand c&c order at the moment. Need to get a card to qualify.

  • Unavailable in the couple of stores I tried :(

  • +1

Am I the only one that thought this was Canola Oil..

  • $41 in the NT

  • +1

Wow this stuff is around $9 in Japan… So crazy

    • Yeah absolutely. Makes me wonder why locally produced whisky is so expensive.

      • I think that was sorted out in previous posts, basically, the government and their insatiable greed for your money.

      • +1

Makes me wonder… T-A-X as discussed above.
Almost no tax imposed (other than consumption or sales tax) in Japan & some other countries.

Used to buy pretty good "scotch" in Myanmar a few years back for us$2 for 700ml😀

      • +1

Excise $83.84 per litre of alcohol. Alcohol can be determined by multiplying the <percentage alcohol> x litres x 83.84. Eg 700ml @ 40% alcohol would be $23.48
        https://www.ato.gov.au/business/excise-and-excise-equivalent…

    • +1

On a bottle of whisky like this there's around $25 of excise and GST, plus any import tariffs.

  • +6

    I've been to Japan everyone

    • +2

      Congratulations

      • Xie xie ni

    • +1

Did you drink yourself? How did you taste??
      I just bought you, kakubin😀

But I thought kakubin is FROM Japan🇯🇵
      You are so square, かくびん!

  • So is this stuff any good?

What other whiskeys does it compare to? JW red or black?
    Cheers

    • Somewhere in between IMO. Like Red label, it is a no age statement blended whisky. But a much better drop. It is not aged minimum 12 years like the Black Label but is still of similar quality.
