Container House + Airbnb = 2nd Income

I want to put this container house on my property (Coomera). So I can airbnb it out and get back packers over. hehe
What obstacles would I be faced with, how much do you think the whole venture will? Appreciate any feedback … from people with experience with this whole granny flat, airbnb GAME

You might need to talk to your council, more related article if you in a farm.

You need a permit to build an inhabitable structure. It will likely considered a granny flat.

A brand new 40 footer is going to set you back around $12,000 for an insulated unit. No point getting uninsulated as it gets too hot/cold.

Add in cost of plumbing and electrical. Electrical will cost a fair bit cause you have to ground the whole SoB.

The container will be the easy part. Depending on position of container you'll need permits, power, water and septic. If it was quick, easy and cheap everyone would be doing it.

  • Will people actually want to stay at your property, and if so, will they want to stay in a shipping container?

    • This.

Important thing to consider is that guest houses are doing rooms at $70 per night in your area, and more conveniently located hostels are offering accommodation options from circa $25 per night.

Are you going to be able to compete with the established accommodation in order to make this enormous container worth the investment?

  • If you buy a second hand container - some of them are disinfected/cleaned with formaldehyde or other chemicals. Potentially paint is hazardous too - so you can spend a fortune stripping it back.

  • home & garden … costed $45k all up

architect here, containers are not as cheap as you think they will be - cost of unit (think of it as a bare frame) you will still need to build a flooring system - line the walls/ceiling insulate - gas/power/water set ups etc etc - if you're looking at this option - i would suggest demountable housing would be the cheaper set up.
