Warning - ATO System Glitch Could Affect Tax Return Date

Hi All,

Just wanted to give a heads up to any of you that have lodged their tax early this year.

I lodged on the 3rd of July and had an effective date of the 13th of July up until yesterday.

I checked my account this morning and noticed that my lodgement had been cancelled. When I tried to lodge again it mentioned that it had already received my lodgement.

I called the ATO to see what was going on and was informed that my lodgement was suspended and placed me on hold for 20 minutes. Transferred departments and was informed that "there had been a system wide glitch that had affected most people who had lodged"

They didn't give me too much information only that they had received an email about this issue and will place an 'action' on my account.

They said I should see a change in 24 hours - hopefully that means a new effective date.

Just wanted to let everyone know incase you wonder why there has been a delay on your return.

  • What's an effective date?

    • The date the money goes into your account.

      • Thanks

Where do you see this effective date? I lodged on the first of the month and just logged on to see my status as "Due". When I went to lodge again it also said I had already lodged.

You're having the issue I described above. If you go to the tab 'Tax' then 'accounts' 'lodgements' and click on the blue link it will say cancelled. Give them a call if you like they might have a new update.

      • Thanks mate, which number did you ring?

        • 13 28 61 - select the first option it will ask you to put in your TFN and DOB.

        • Any updates?

        • @Mysterymeat:

I just checked a dozen returns lodged last week; all have an expected refund date of the 13th.

        • @Telcius: Did you lodge them through mytax? Hoping that this will be fixed overnight.

        • @Mysterymeat:

          no I'm a tax agent!

        • @Mysterymeat: Didn't get time to call them but logged in just now and I have a new effective date of 19th, but also $30 less on my return than the previous time for no apparent reason

@nicread: Same here, $15 less than last time, did you remember to claim all of your interest?

Typical ATO. Takes our money, can't even keep their IT systems in order.

  • Good that I do my taxes towards end of October, plenty of time for them to fix their IT issues.

It's not a new system. Think they could get it right after all of these years.

      • They are beta testing a new portal system - may have something to do with it.

        • Could be. My portal looks screwy. There's no 'savings pig' with my super anymore.

  • I tried to do mine last night - site was down for at least a couple of hours outside of maintenance schedule.

    • Yea, after that is when the glitch occurred.

  • Just checked and my effective date is still 13. I lodged on 1 July and the processed date is 7 July.

    • Lucky you :) I did update my banking details at time of lodgement. Wondering if this had anything to do with it.

      • I am waiting for a balance to drop to zero either tonight or tomorrow latest.

        Fingers crossed!

Same here. Effective date is 13th. Lodged on 7th
      No issue

  • It's not a new tax, it's a new tax system.

  • Terrible.

Next you'll be telling me I can't pay my ATO bill in iTunes gift cards.

    Mine was lodged on 3/7
    Effective date: 13th
Nothing has changed. I guess it’s only affecting a very small number of returns.
