GST claim international travel for oversize and multiple small items

Fellow Ozbargains,

May I ask your experience requesting GST return for oversized items? I am bringing multiple items out of the country (mostly clothes, shoes and a couple of kitchen appliances) for relatives abroad. I am traveling through Melbourne airport. I have claimed GST before for small items that you bring as carry on, but never for bigger items such as kitchen appliance in check in luggage. Does anyone know if it is possible to do it? Is it also possible to check in the clothes and request GST?

Thank you very much for any feedback

Note that there are different conditions for claiming a refund on liquids, aerosols, gels and oversized items. These must first be sighted by the ABF office in T2 arrivals and then checked in with your baggage.

  • Are your multiple items in invoices >= $300 for each shop (strictly shop's ABN) that you purchased from? Read humdingaling's first link.

  • Are you bringing everything including the kitchen sink?

Anyway, I’ve seen what other people have done. From my own experience in Brisbane, there’s a customs office on the ground floor of the airport as you go in to the airport. I assume there would be something similar in Melbourne. You show your receipts and the goods to an officer to sight and mark on the receipts. Then once you clear customs you can claim your refund.

I’ve seen a few tourists claiming multiple receipts from Coles, Woolworths and Chemist Warehouse - dozens of receipts stapled together. They weren’t carrying anything — everything was checked in. The customs officer went crazy punching the calculator and typing everything into the computer. But they got everything processed and the shoppers were happy. The officers were exhausted. I was behind and just claimed one item. Took a few seconds. One thing to help speed up the process is to download the TRS app and fill in the details beforehand.

So in short you can check in the stuff you want to claim back GST.
