TRS claim amount when using vouchers and cashback on eBay

When eBay apply vouchers (like the latest 25% PROXY one) you normally get the voucher applied in PayPal as a refund/discount.
However I was not sure if this gets reflected on the official tax invoice as well or not?
Similar with cashback, cashreawards and EFTPOS rebate like deals, obviously you can get further discounts and then still claim a higher TRS amount (or it could put you over the 900 dollar threshold.

E.g eBay RRP 1000.
20% off so you pay 800 but get PayPal refund
On the tax invoice would it be 1000 or 800?

Further you could get 80 or 100 dollars off or the 1000 might put you outside the threshold!?

Discount isn't shown on invoice, your invoice value will be the pre-discount price.

    • agree. you claim based on what showing in the invoice, dont worry about other perks you get.

kind of wrong but the officer will only check invoice anyway, so….

one of my best experience, bought second hand but just 3 weeks old mobile phone comes with invoice, i paid like 40% less than what in the invoice, but claim gst back in full original purchase price

    • Thanks.

  • Yeah, from experience it's not shown on the invoice, so you get the cash back off the full price. Since the retailer is providing the invoice they're under obligation to collect that amount of GST and so technically it's a wash as far as the ATO is concerned.

If you don't want to hit a limit, contact the retailer and ask them if they can issue you an invoice with the amount you paid (or at least they got paid) on, they should probably save them some GST this way depending on how their deal with eBay works.

I've found eBay to be a pain itself since I often have to directly ask the retailers for their invoices or I don't get one.

  • Why don't you just explain it to the trs officer…?

"no wait, I understand that's the price on the invoice, but I got 25% off from the ebay code I found on ozbargain, then I paid using ebay giftcard that I got for 5% off using wish egiftcards, oh and then I got a further discount from using cashrewards… "
