RAM Compatibility Advice

Hi Guys,

I've spent ages researching this and feel like I still don't really know what to go with!

With the recent Ebay deals, I've been eyeing off Corsair Vengeance LPX/RGB or Trident Z RGB 16GB 3000MHz kits, but I don't really know which is ideal. RGB sounds kinda cool (difference of $15-$20), but I don't really know how well it'll sync with my motherboard. Looking at the corsair vengeance memory compatibility, only the Samsung B-die versions are listed as compatible and I have noooo idea how to find the exact version of the RAM I'm buying!

What I mean is, for CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 there are the following versions with this one model number:

3.XX Micron
4.XX Samsung B-Die
5.XX Hynix

The motherboard only lists version 4 as compatible, but I don't know how to find that when online shopping?

At the end of the day, what I want to find out is if the RAM compatibility list is critical for my selection, or if I can just pick whatever I like and it'll work?

Motherboard: MSI B350M Mortar Arctic - Compatibility list

  • I remember reading a while ago that RAM compatibility has improved over when it was first launched. That being said, that was almost a year ago when I read that when I was building my current rig. I also managed to find sticks that matched the compatibility list exactly.

I've found my usual retailers and online sellers are generally open to queries regarding stuff like this and it wouldn't hurt at all to try asking.

I realise I didn't quite help as much as would like. Apologies. Also good luck in your build!

    • That's what I'm hoping, but for $250 I'm a little worried about getting it wrong!

  • IMO: I've tried different RAM brands, but have had the best reliability of Corsair.

    • Mm, corsair seems to have a good reputation. It just scared me that only the Samsung specific versions are listed on compatibility list. Surely they wouldn't do that unless the others were known to have issues?

  • Not according to MSI web site vers 3 4 & 5 are all Samsung chipsets by Corsair.

  • I am pretty sure all you need to match is the speed, so 3000 and whether it is DIMM or UDIMM. UDIMM is usually mentioned so if neither is mentioned it should be DIMM. That would have to be some cheap ass shonky mobo to only accept a corsair DIMM 3000 DDR 4, it should accept any DIMM 3000 DDR4 RAM with the same form factor.

I just read your mobo, I bought that mobo in plus15 sale. I put 16gB Kingston DIMM DDR4 3000 RAM in 4 weeks ago or so, it runs fine. (Make sure you use the correct RAM channels if putting in two and get them in a two pack so serial numbers are consecutive) Its a good looking mobo hey.

On the note of rgb, i would suggest dont put anything in your rig that would cause the temps to rise.
