Has anyone a practical semi-stylish chalk wall, glass style dry-erase board, or LED writing board in their house?

Just wondering if anyone has at their home a large chalk wall, wall-mounted glass dry-erase board, or even those new LED writing boards, that both looks smart and is practical?

I've got a space approximately 3m high x 2-3m wide that adjoins the kitchen that I'm thinking I could utilise.
Primarily - to try and get the family better organised and aware of upcoming events, and also an area to do maths problems or the like with kids.

The coloured glass sheets look great, but seem to be very heavy and also quite expensive if going down the retail route.
There is cheaper approaches that look promising - http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Glass-Dry-Erase-Board/

The chalk approach would seem to create lots of dust/mess, can easily smudge, but is definitely cheap. Whether the chalk wall paint is durable too remains to be seen.

The backlit style LED writing boards such as the following look great, but are likely too small, could burn through electricity, and may not be overly durable…

Has anyone got something they are proud of that doesn't devalue the house :) ?

  • If you want classy, you'd have to go with glass and colourful dry-erase markers. Chalk or a white-board will just look… practical. A chalk board might also just look dusty and dirty and impossible to keep clean too.

How about a 30” Monitor and raspberry pi mounted on the back showing a google calendar ?

Could set it up so it shows different colours for different family members?

  • What about checking gumtree etc for old glass sliding doors being sold very cheaply or given away. Then just remove the glass and make a little timber frame to attach them to the wall.
