Tourist Refund Scheme and Amazon AU

Does anyone know if products purchased on Amazon AU (shipped from the US) but with GST paid are eligible for the Tourist Refund Scheme?

The TRS website lists eligible claims including

goods purchased over the Internet and imported into Australia

However, I wonder if this is any different as Amazon requires GST payment for these types of shipments.

If your invoice lists a GST component, then you will be able to claim it back.

    • don't think that's true as you'll also need the retailer's ABN. I've bought items that were shipped from overseas with GST included in the invoice, but couldn't claim those as the retailer didn't have an ABN.

      • It would be Amazon.com.au's ABN as that's where you bought it from?

        • my bad was reading a bunch of TRS-related thread and wasn't paying attention - thought jjjaar was making a blanket statement that as long as the invoice has a GST component it can be claimed.

and yes, can confirm the invoices for my Amazon purchases shipped from the US was raised by Amazon (Amazon Commercial Services Pty Ltd; ABN 30 616 935 623).

  • A bit late to this as I was also searching for a similar answer. I've noticed OP actually quoted the TRS website incorrectly - "goods purchased over the Internet into Australia are not eligible for a TRS claim

    What can't be claimed?
    * A refund will not be paid on the following goods and services:
    * alcohol such as beer, brandy, fortified wines and spirits (travellers can claim wine under the TRS) and tobacco products (these goods can be purchased from duty-free shops)
    * GST-free goods where no GST was paid
    * consumables wholly or partially consumed in Australia for example, food
    * goods that are prohibited on aircraft or ships for safety reasons, including gas cylinders, fireworks and aerosol sprays (check with your airlines for prohibited items)
    * unaccompanied goods (including goods sent by cargo or international mail)
    * services such as accommodation, tours, car rental and labour charges
    * goods purchased over the Internet and imported into Australia
    * gift cards/vouchers (although goods purchased with gift cards/vouchers are eligible for a refund subject to all TRS requirements being met).
