  • Be nice if first year uni students got the same benefit.

Obviously would be nice for anyone, but I can't see why tradies are given special treatment ?? Next they'll want to make tax claims on their work vehicle. Oh, hang on….

Most universities have accessible public transport.
Most trades will be required to carry tools to sites which vary in location and duration.
Apprentices need a vehicle, most students won't.

      • Also don't know what it is like now but back when I was an apprentice after tools / expenses I was only earning around $6 an hour.

It was extremely difficult financially. But that was about 15-20 years ago now.

        • -1

Yeah, when I studied there was no public transport available and I was earning $0 an hour.

@YellowDieselGolf: and getting a subsidised degree?

        • @YellowDieselGolf:

          Think of the callout fee.

        • @Mike88:

Good point. There’s not much point in a labor government offering discounts to university students.

    • Uni students get concession fares on Public Transport.

How about other professions - Emergency Service workers on shift work, for example.

    • Can't they just catch an ambulance to work?

      • +2

        Uberulance?

    • +3

Emergency service/shift workers are on full rates, apprentices are paid below the minimum wage.

    • Travel may still be a claimable expense if you are travelling between work locations. Maybe you pick up your uniform from one station and then drive to another for the day…

      /not an accountant

  • Apprentices are not the only people required to work between 8.30pm and 5.30am…

    • +3

But apprentices are on a low wage during their education. A first year apprentice brick layer* earns $13.64/hour or $518.28/week full time.

I paid to go to uni.
        And to get there.
        And to park there.
No one paid me shit for my education or placements.

Did you pay full fee upfront? Or did you utilise a HECS or HELP system?

  • Damn. 8 years too late

  • +2

I'm not a liberal voter but this is simple vote buying for the tradies, there's an election coming up.

    • Except they've had the offer last year and the year before in non-election years.
