Website Frequently Goes Down

So I'm a regular Ozbargainer and lately I've had some serious issues getting onto the website. It seems to be random from what I can tell, but I will be unable to access Ozbargain from my phone (using Aussie Deals app) or my computer (using Firefox). I go to isitdownrightnow.com and am told that the website is still up (with 850ms ping). The outages typically last 2-5minutes.

Is this just me? If so, I don't get how it can be happening on multiple devices simultaneously.

  • Its just you. Professional Ozbargainer here and don't see any issue…

  • Maybe do a trace route next time and let us know the result. Best to obfuscate your IP address if you post here or let us know in TWAM.

    • Cheers, will do!

    • It happened again and I now realise it's the local network. Used a different browser with same results. A trace route got through eventually. Https://ibb.co/d8WFyd

Firefox tells me it's a timeout problem, so that ping is preventing the connection I guess? Any suggestions for fixing this?

      • I guess the next step would be to eliminate DNS issue vs. something else. So next time it goes down, do a tracert to ozbargain.com.au and also 43.229.60.154. If the latter works and ozbargain.com.au doesn't then I'd say there is some issue with either the DNS server you use (guessing Telstra's) or possibly the routers caching of DNS (not too sure about this one).

You should also update your router's firmware as there are some DNS related fixes in there as well as it's good idea anyway.

        • Yeah, I might try changing DNS settings. I don't really want to mess with the router as it's a workplace network, so hopefully DNS settings on my computer are enough! Thanks for the tips. :)

  • Are you using a VPN with that high latency?

    • The 850ms ping is from isitdownrightnow.com, so I have no idea how they direct their checks, but I highly doubt the latency is on their end! What do you see when you go to isitdownrightnow.com??

  • (using Aussie Deals app)

Please note that this is an unofficial app. There is way more functionality in just using the OzBargain mobile website. You can add an icon to your home screen by clicking the … and Add to Home screen.

Why no official app, cant scotty do java?

      • +6

Been doing Java since '96, had enough of that and now refuse to touch it :)

That's beside the point. I do not see there is a need to develop multiple interface for OzBargain.

        • I was just stirring, lol.

But srsly, wouldnt it be worth it to protect revenue,

that app has 10,000 dloads, with his own adwords campaign (I assume) and 1000 dloads on the pro $2 version

so your leaving money on the table.

Actually I might have a crack at it, can I have permission to put this site in a webview in a android app?

        • @t_c: Our issue is mainly with app developers misrepresenting OzBargain. That should have been protected by Trademark — if any of them dare to call themselves OzBargain.

Yep, I do find myself returning to the website frequently. It's more of a convenience thing. I will confirm next time whether it's an app issue, but the fact that it also occurs on my firefox web browser makes me think it's not.

  • I have actually noticed it a few times over the last 2 months I blamed my home network as well because it was fine running off data. Next time I'll trace.

If you are using that default ISP DNS
You can try changing it to a better one for speed, reliability and privacy. I used to use google 8.8.8.8 but now on Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 and it's great so far.

    https://www.theverge.com/2018/4/3/17191538/how-to-change-dns…

    Change DNS for individual devices

    Windows

Open the Control Panel. Click on Network and Internet, and then Network and Sharing Center. Choose “Change Adapter Settings” from the list on the left.

Next, right click on whatever Wi-Fi network you’re currently on, and choose Properties. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Properties.

Click “Use The Following DNS Server Addresses,” and replace whatever’s there with your new DNS. In the case of Cloudflare, you’d enter 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1. Click OK, followed by Close, and you’re done.

    Android

Android requires a static IP address to use custom DNS addresses, which takes additional setup steps. The router approach is recommended here.

If you’ve already done that, go to settings, then Wi-Fi. Long-press on your current Wi-Fi network and choose “Modify Network.” You might need to go to an advanced section depending on your Android device’s software. Add your new primary and secondary DNS addresses to the DNS 1 and DNS 2 fields.

    • Oooh, thanks for the tip! I am on a work computer, so I don't want to mess up network settings too much but I figure this shouldn't affect anything other than web browsing?

      • It will only affect your PC.

It does affect every application that accesses the internet on that PC.

Just remember to screenshot what the settings were before so you can change it back whenever you need.

Depends on also how much access you have to change things on the PC. Large workplaces may have settings locked down for security reasons.

        • I'm in an 8 person workspace with no domain, so no issues there. I'll give it a shot next time Ozbargain acts up and hopefully this'll fix it! Cheers
