Prepaid Mobile Number Ownership Help!

Hi ozbargainers,
Need advise as asking this for a family.

A family member bought pre-paid sim about 9 years ago and still own and uses the number.

TL;DR: Registered pre-paid Sim owner unknown. How to get it and transfer ownership.

L;DR:
Issue: pre-paid sim is not under <his/her> name. I fear it was purchased as a pre-registered phone number at that time, or we had registered it under different family member name. Telcom provider unable to help to even tell us if it is indeed under our family name or just completely random person (aka pre-registered).

What is the process of obtaining the original owner’s details and transfering the ownership to my family member’s name?

Your expertise would be greatly appreciated.

  • Since it's 9 years ago, I assume it's postpaid?
Are you trying to port out?

If so, I know for Virgin (postpaid) to Kogan (prepaid) port, you only require account number (on the bill) and actual phone number to match, and you can port out.

You need to provide more info, which telco, and what's the purpose of changing ownership?

    • apologise. Prepaid Lycamobile. Sometimes need to enquire to update details, lose of sim and reordering sim, or porting out in the future etc.

      • Are there any postpaid lycamobile plans?
If you can, you could switch it to postpaid, then be issued with an account number.
Postpaid>Prepaid port only requires account number and phone number :)

  • Which telco is your family member with?

    • LycaMobile.

      • Maybe try and see if you can gain access to the account online through their website and change the registration details that way?

        • Tried DOB, couldn’t match details.

  • Just keep submitting DOBs for a port order with another telco until you find the right one? If it's registered to a family member then you can gather all their DOBs and try them all? Alternatively try 01/01/1900 or something like that if they used a dummy DOB?

    • Tried all, but none worked.

  • I had a similar situation happen to me previously when I purchased a rare number but a few years later I figured out it was not in my name.

I found a job at the telco at the call centre and after a few weeks of training I finally got access to the system and changed the details. This was in the earl 2000's though but our centre moved overseas.

    • That doesn't seem right, I'm sure the first bit of training you would have received would be that you don't access your own record or that of anyone you know! Conflict of interest etc.

      • +3

I think it's ok in this situation as my mum said so.

  • Login via portal you'll find your details.

A lot of the time Lycamobile dealers on the street would market this sim card as a "dark sim" for illegal activity. It was very popular in the past, but these days you rarely see these dealers on the street anymore since the signup process changed, or maybe a few got arrested… Who knows.

For example, they changed a few letters in my surname when they registered it. I didn't even have to provide any ID. I think there must have been a backdoor whereby they click, "yes, I have verified this person's details are correct". Just like the Vodafone fiasco which popped up a few months back.

My Lyca account has since become defunct. I suspect your family member has this same issue as I have described.

Are you able to login as guest on the website? If not, you can try brute forcing yourself in by going sequentially with the DOB. I remember not having to provide these details a few years ago to login.

In the past you could just request a password to send to your phone number and login, after which you can see all the details. You couldn't change the details if I recall. Has this changed? (regarding both the sign in process and editing of details)

    • The login process requires DOB now (for reset) and their guest account does not work. Lycamobile Rep can't access account without giving them Full name and DOB.

      • Oh damn, the guest function used to work. RIP…

I guess you could first try changing the months and do that 12 times.

The guy who did mine altered my birthday exactly 6 months from my real one. Might be the same guy who might have sold it to your family member. (Didn't really even ask him to that do, maybe it was implied when he talked about how to use the sim and I was like yeah I want one). I was wearing a black business jacket at the time. Maybe he thought I was a gangster. lol. I bought a sim for the novelty.
