Update The Name on The Receipt for TRS

I recently bought a bag from Chanel, and didn’t have any plans to go oversea at that time, so I kept the name on the receipt short. But I now have some plans and would like to take the TRS refund (my item is over $1000). However, I rang up Chanel and they said that they cannot reprint the invoice under a different name.

I know that for other stores, you can ask them to reprint your receipt with the name update. Is this right? Any recommendations on what i should do?

  • kept the name on the receipt short

The TRS rules are quite specific, so I guess the only chance you have of a refund is if the name on the invoice is a close resemblance to your real name - esp the surname and first initial.

Invoices for over $1000 also require an address - is the address correct?

If none of these match, then you've got no chance.

    • So saying if i bring a bank statement showing the same address would that help?

      • if i bring a bank statement showing the same address

Does the surname and address match? And is the charge on that bank statement?

You can give it a try and the worst they can do is say no.

Doesn't sound like much you can do

I don't know what a "bang from Chanel" is, but do they do refunds? Buy another "bang" (bag??) to get a proper receipt then return with the old receipt

    What does

kept the name on the receipt short.

    mean?

Like the name says "Jon Smith" When your full name is Jonathan Smith? Or just Jon? or is it a case of you having a non-English name but you use a western name to avoid problems/miss spellings?

Regardless you need your address on the receipt and they strictly enforce this.

Channel is within their rights to refuse to reissue you a receipt with a different name.

    • I have a non-english name. Passport name is just long. Do you recommend bringing proof of address?

They won't accept it without the address on the receipt and they are going to ask about the name on the receipt vs passport.

I think you're out of luck here. Also if you did bring it out and in again technically you'd have to pay the gst back.

For $1000 and over purchases, name and address must be on the tax invoice.

This could be your excuse to get a new tax invoice.

For your interest, these are the requirements for tax invoices.

  • they said that they cannot reprint the invoice under a different name

But can they reprint the invoice under your full legal name? They are two different things.

    • Yeah that’s what i am hoping for

I would just talk to them and let them know you don't want it under a 'different' name, it just needs to be under your full legal name. Can't see why they can't do that.

        • They said that it’s illegal to update the name.m, which I found rather odd.

    • I will give that a try
