Budget Friendly Kids Birthday Party Idea's

A quick search and I couldn't find anything on OzB about kids birthday parties, for something that can easily get quite expensive (average price for the options in an article in my local paper was about $35-40 a head), I am surprised there has not been more talk of budget-friendly options on here.

The main reason I was going to post was that I am after idea's for my daughters upcoming 8th birthday, some additional info is that her previous one at 5 was at Mcdonalds (you don't find easier or cheaper), she is pretty active and more tomboyish that girly girl.

It might be good though if you have got any good idea's in general that you post them up anyway so everyone can benefit.

So I will kick off with a few things that I have found,

Mcdonalds Parties, probably best suited to about 5ish yr olds, but it's as cheap and as easy as it comes, we have done more traditional parties at home and they still worked out more expensive and a whole lot more effort.

Kmart is great for decorations, they have a pretty good range at quite cheap prices.

Parties in a local park are a pretty good option, choose one with some decent play equipment and there is half of your entertainment covered.

Probably the best party so far was another of my daughters recent 10th birthday, it was a high tea style party in a rotunda at a local park with an "Amazing Race" inspired activity which took about 40 mins to complete, involved getting a clue, then they had to find the hidden challenge (small jigsaw puzzle, Pictionary type draw and guess etc) and it went down really well.

I just had my 5yr old son's party in the local park. We cooked sausages on the free bbqs as well as brought a few other things to eat/drink. Kids loved smashing open the pinata full of lollies from kmart/reject shop.

Kids have fun with whatever. If weather permits, a local park works great. Play equipment and space to burn off sugar

  • Id do something like timezone / bowling or a cinema party

you can do the park for food at the end but having a party just in a park is more suited for younger kids unless you setup activities like bubble soccer or frisbee golf

  • Mc Donalds party

Not sure where you are, but Brisbane has a lot of parks, and generally the larger parks are quite popular for birthday parties. The parks are ideal for kids birthday parties because the council provides free BBQ stoves, pergolas(if you get there early enough) and kids playground. The downside is that the popular spots are usually taken by 7am. All you would need to do is put up the decorations, take them down when you leave and generally clean up after yourselves.

I just had my daughters 8th birthday party on Sunday

We did a cupcake cooking ‘class’ at home. Teams of 3/4. Measure the flour, sugar & eggs, mix and put into tins, cook. Eat some food play some Mario kart on our projector while cooking, then second half was decorating.

At a guess $15 is per head inc all party food, ingredients, decorating supplies etc. Everyone walked away happy.

We borrowed a few mixers so the teams all had one to use

Downsides was the floor needed a mop at the end, and probably 3 loads through the dishwasher

    • I like ideas like that, that are a little bit different and not overly commercial/materialistic. This daughter isn't really into baking yet though, a bit more tomboyish which I think is what is making it harder. She would like a sleepover but wants to invite more than I'd be happy to take.

We did something similar with my daughter and had a pizza & sundae party. Bought the ingredients for both from Costco.

Everyone had great fun making pizza, then we had a movie, and afterwards making & decorating sundae "creations".

  • indoor play centres like monkey mania or chipmunks have reasonable prices. they may play as much as they want until they drop.

Places like Monkey mania will profit from the exhorbotant prices of the crap food they demand you pay for.

I went to MM once. Vowed to never again after a poor experience. Kids loved it though.

      Loud and overpriced!

  • Depends on what your daughter like. If she is into girl things like beauty, spa.. you can make her a spa parties and find all the supplies you need at kmart ( not talking about face mask or beauty products as it could be dangerous for kids skin but you can find some white face sheets free of products which mean you make your own product at home , cute and fun slippers, bath robe and accessories for hair).
If she is more a sport girl , you can buy some backyard toys (again kmart or target) and get the kids to do some challenges like running, jumping in a potato bag, hold cook eggs in a spoon with the mouth…
And for food , i would think of a cold buffet where everyone can serve themeselves like sandwiches, chips, fuits and veggies with dipping…
There a lot of things you can do , you just need have to have a lot of free time.

  • Park + Costco.

    • Nearest Costco to the GC is over 100km away, unfortunately.

      • Oh, that's a shame. Costco is amazing for feeding large amounts of people. You can also try platters from the usual supermarkets/ALDI I guess, but not sure on their pricing tbh.

But yeah - parks are amazing for large events because they're usually free, can be decorated without worrying about too much mess, generally easy to clean after wards (better than in your home), and can fit any number of people. Even if you want to be fancy, you can just load up on fancy streamers, balloons, table-cloths.

Want to be fancier, you can look into renting a jumping castle (?), but you might have to talk to council before setting that up in a park.

        • Yeah, chances are it will be something in a park, our house isn't ideal for large numbers, just trying to do something a little bit different to a normal play date though.
