Rental Car Excess Insurance for Commercial Vehicles

Hi All

I've been hiring utes for a day here and there about 5-6 times a year for the past few years to do odd jobs like picking up gumtree purchases, picking up renovation materials for works im doing on the house etc…

The rental is usually ~$55 for 24 hours for a single cab ute. Excess usually about $2-3k or you can purchase the waiver for $25 or so.

I've just booked one for tomorrow and horrified to be quoted over the phone an excess of $6000 and waiver at $42.

Ive just been googling for a stand alone excess policy and called 3 companies but none of them will cover a ute

Does anyone know a company that offers this at a reasonable price?

Cheers

    Yup.

Then rent from one of the previous places you're rented from?

    • this is the previous place…

  • Tripcover?

    • They don't cover utes :(

      • So random, are utes more accident prone?

  • When car rental place says $55 and $25 for Insurance. $55 is a clickbait price. Actual price is $80, $80 for single cab ute not that bad price.
Or you can always try alternative methods such as hiring a trailer or loan it from Bunnings instead of ute.

    • No towball on our family car. Its a VW Passat so to get one works out stupidly expensive (can get a lot of ute hires for the cost…)

  • Get a credit card that has complimentary car hire insurance

    • I used to have one but cancelled it 6 months ago. Am looking for another card now and this feature has shot to the top of the list of importance

    • damn good idea. I have an amex card with this insurance and I was stupid enough to buy insurance when I hired the car with this credit card a few years ago. I'm not gonna be this stupid again.

      Thank you so much.

  • No expert but have hired Ute's from bunnings before and it's worked out pretty good

    • Their base rate is a little higher but excess a little lower. If you pay for the waiver, the price was identical with the company i used

  • So, hired the ute on Sat and returned today.

It turns out they have a "middle of the road" excess reduction product (which they do not advertise) offering a $1k excess for $20 or so a day. Took that and moved on with my life.
