  • Hopefully they do this with "Monster" too.

$8 for monster isn't too bad! Monster will never be cheaper than mother.

  • This shit is still legally sold?

What’s the big deal? Apart from the unhealthy aspect.

I don’t really drink them, but I don’t see why they’d be illegal.

  • cooking your liver makes even cheaper. nice

    • it's bad for your liver?

    • +6

"Cooking your liver" is a such a bizarre statement. The overt problems of energy drinks are to the heart, not the liver.

Caffeine - drinking a moderate amount of caffeine-containing beverages each day significantly reduces your risk of developing chronic liver disease.
Taurine - often used for detoxing the liver. https://www.puresciencesupplements.com/blogs/articles/detox-…
Gluconurolactone - glucuronides "combine with toxic substances, such as morphine and depot medroxyprogesterone acetate, by converting them to water-soluble glucuronide-conjugates which are excreted in the urine."
Inositol - taken for weight loss and liver health. It is produced in the kidneys.
The other energy drink ingredients, vitamins B3, B6, B12, niacin (B5), and pantothenic acid (B5), are present in such low quantities that it would take 10+ cans per day to reach anywhere near "cooking your liver".

That being said, excess consumption (more than four per day for months) of energy drinks has been occasionally linked with liver problems. https://www.mnn.com/health/fitness-well-being/stories/6-ways… I'd attribute that more to the sugar than to any of the liver detox "energy drink" ingredients. Excess consumption of sugary drinks can result in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-alcoholic_fatty_liver_dise…), despite the liver health promoting ingredients in energy drinks.

Energy drinks contain less caffeine than your average shot of coffee, whilst also adding a lot of additional supplements including Taurine and an array of B vitamins, as twocsies pointed out.

Drinking any “standard” flavour which has a high calorie count, thanks to the sugar, isn’t ideal but it’s no less ideal than drinking said sugar from other sources (or eating it, for that matter). The sugarfree variants contain all of the same benefits without the calories associated with sugar (inb4 someone links chain email “science” for artificial sweeteners)

      • Having 200% of your daily sugar intake in a single drink 'isn't ideal'.
