Was looking to renew my BYO plan and came across this article of the new pricing. Looks like the old pricing is a lot better. What are your thoughts?

  • If that's real and lets you hotspot, I'm cancelling my internet right away and signing up for the unlimited.

    • But it will be capped at 1.5Mbps unless you're on the $199 where it will remain at full speed and not throttled.

      • Yeah I don't give two shits about the other plans since they're terrible value. Unlimited at Telstra's full 4G speeds would be amazing however.

They'll have some "fair use policy". Which is BS if you ask me. "Unlimited" has a very simple definition. Why the ACCC has time to chase after small NBN outfits with minor wording issues when they've done F***all about companies using "Unlimited" to actually mean "Oh yeah, definitely limited" I've no idea.

        • @HighAndDry: I'll definitely be interested to read the fine print. If it's something BS like 200GB per month then I obviously wouldn't sign up for it. Here's hoping it'll be good value considering the high price.

        • @HighAndDry: I thought ACCC had been down that route many years ago with Optus "unlimited" broandband ie. up to like 2 GB back in the days then throttled to 64 kbps.

        • @ronnknee: Really? I'd like to read up on what the ACCC actually did, because it can't have been that effective. You ask 100 people what "unlimited" means and they'll pretty much tell you the same answer, and yet telcos will tell you it means something completely different.

          I guess it's no longer "2GB then throttled to 64kbps" at least…..

        • @HighAndDry:

Measurability. When the reasonable consumer sees "100mbps", they think they will see speeds of 100mbps… Or at least say 80-90. Some consumers were seeing <25 due to losing the copper lotto.

When a reasonable consumer sees "unlimited data" on a mobile plan, they won't typically think they can hotspot it to their computer and replace their home connection… Oh and the people who do think of that idea (ie yourself) are smart enough consumers to know fair use policy won't allow that (as is what you've assumed here) - no one is being misled.

        • @dyl:

When a reasonable consumer sees "unlimited data" on a mobile plan, they won't typically think they can hotspot it to their computer and replace their home connection…

They might not think of it, but if you asked: And if you hotspotted using your phone, should it still be unlimited, I would bet a majority (if not all) would tell you: "Yes, unlimited is unlimited."

It's not even that - people's views only get considered if the wording is ambiguous. "Unlimited" is not ambiguous wording. And hiding things in fineprint has never been okay, even if people know to look there. I can't advertise chicken as beef, even if I'm selling solely to say lawyers and I put in the fineprint "no, it's actually chicken".

Advertising something as "Unlimited" when it's very clearly limited isn't just misleading - it's plainly false.

    • The way its presented, the unlimited is definitely unlimited (i.e. no slower option).

      • If it's actually unlimited rather than unlimited with limits it will be described as unmetered.

        • Good chance it will be unlimited with fair play use, but without the 'peace of mind data'

Yup. Here's Telstra's "FAQ as to what we think Unlimited means":

          https://www.telstra.com.au/content/dam/tcom/personal/consume…

          Relevant part on page 16:

and may not use your service in a manner that we reasonably consider is ‘unacceptable’ or ‘unreasonable’ given the nature of the plan.

Hahahahahahaha. That's wide enough to drive two semis through.

      • Unless the network is congested and someone is on a business grade data plan, where their traffic gets prioritised…

Are these prices for real? $59 for 3gb of data, unlimited phone and SMS and locked in for 2 years? Wow.

Please tell me I'm reading this wrong.

    • Don't forget adding $10/month if you want the 'unlimited' slowed data option ;)

    • +1

This isn’t BYO pricing though. There’s probably a BYO 12 month set coming too.

  • +2

These are mobile plans, not BYO plans. Current BYO plans have less data for same price: $59 p/m for 2GB (new = 3GB), $79 for 5GB (new = 10GB), $99 for 20GB (new = 30GB) and $129 for 40gb (new = 60GB). Yet everyone is saying the new ones are worse, am I missing something?

    • +2

Sorry I meant the current phone plans have less data for same price (not BYO).

  • AS to the OP yeah seems a bit expensive. I'm getting 8gb per month for $40 currently so I'm not sure this leaky is going to be correct.

    • your plan is BYO whereas these are going to be bundled with a handset

      • Sorry I failed to mention these are bundled with a handset and not BYO. I can't seem to find any info on the BYO plans.

        • No worries, I saw BYO in the title and ran with that. :)

  • if this is really BYO then its bloody terrible

    • Agreed. It would have to be bundled with a phone. No idea why people down voting. These are truly crappy deals if BYO.

Thanks mate, I'll add to the OP.

  • BYO:

    Monthly Data
All data expires at the end of the month and is not shareable.
Data is for personal use in a smartphone only. Our FairPlay policy
applies. Data is for use in Australia

Also, according to their blog, all users will be migrated over to these new plans at end of contract - no grandfathering any more.

    • That means no pooling of data like many people currently do? wtf?

      • these plans are crap. Way worse. Seems like some of their recent offers such as Endless Data BYO 40GB (then throttled 1500mbps) $69/mo backfired?

      • +1

That means no pooling of data like many people currently do? wtf?

        That seems to be correct.

Here's a quote from someone from whirlpool based on the new plans:

        I currently pay $64/month.
I’d need to pay $192/month on these new plans.

      • +1

        Yep, RIP Data Pools :'(

  • I thought the point of these new plans was to offer better value to customers because Telstra are haemorrhaging customers? All they seem to do is highlight how poor their prices are.

    • I actually think these new plans are pretty decent. Signed up for the 15GB $49 plan today (actually ended up being ~$44 with alumini discount).

With there being heaps of 20GB ~$50 p/m plans on the Optus and Vodafone networks, I reckon getting 15GB on a better network is quite reasonable.

Really don't understand all the hate towards these new plans. Seems like the first time in forever that Telstra have provided decent data on their lower tiers.

      • $49 for 15GB BYO?
That was already their regular pricing for quite a while and you could pretty easily negotiate them down to $39/15GB, some people have managed to do even better.

      • For me the hate comes with dropping the data pooling, that is bloody essential when you've got 5+ mobile services all on different data amounts…it's a damn headache trying to manage everyone on such different data amounts.
