Do Apple TV Boxes Ever Get Discounted at JB Hi-Fi?

I am keen to buy a 32GB 4K Apple TV and have enough money in JB Hifi vouchers to buy one. Before I do, however, I would like to know if it's worth holding out a bit longer in the hope that JB regularly/sometimes offer a discount on Apple TV sets. I know Apple are a bit funny about their RRP being consistent but, in the words of Bloody Mary, "you've got to have a dream"…

  • Yeah i saw them in sale a few months back. About $190 odd i think for the 32gb. Didnt see it advertised anywhere though. Just happened to see it when in store on that day. Almost contemplated getting a 2nd but i only have one 4k tv so didnt bother. Though my digital movie library is quite heavily embedded in this device now so may do so at some point.

    • +1

Must have been a damaged box. I have never seen them discounted, and I have been wanting to buy one for a while. And eBay always seems to have them in their coupon sales, if they are made available at all, considerably jacked up.

  • I believe all apple prices are controlled by apple, as in everything apple. If there is a discount, it is an apple discount, so should be the same price everywhere.

    • Not so much that, but Apple used to have smaller margins (I know from previous experience in Retail)so I doubt much has changed.

      • I shouldn't be surprised, but I was. I suppose they put a lot of money into sales - as in presentation, showroom, dudes on the floor ready to serve, advertising campaigns etc.

  • only reason to buy one is if you’re stuck with iTunes. Just buy any reputable smart tv and it will be able to do all the same stuff without an extra remote, etc.

    • I am pretty sure user interface on the Apple TV would be better, and software updates, including for all the apps, be made available for considerably longer than you would get from a Smart TV.
This would be true for mainstream android set top boxes as well. Personally, smart features on the TV aren’t a relevant consideration in my purchase decision. The screen is all.
It’s the same with cars. The car companies aren’t as good at infotainment interface as CA or AA.

  • Thanks for the feedback. There are other reasons for getting Apple TV. We are not an Apple family but my understanding is that the Apple interface and overall experience is the best out there. I also understand that Apple audio quality is the best for streaming. The audio is important to me. Cheers

    • The Apple TV is probably the best of the set top boxes. It’s three biggest cons are price, price, and some people have issues with the controller.

That said, the biggest consideration for me is, is it worth the extra money for the 64GB version, particularly if I am streaming 4K HDR with Dolby vision?

    • The touch remote sucks but everything else is fine. If you have a harmony remote or something then it removed the bitter pill of the remote.

      Remote problems:
Unintuitive layout - I need to look to find the buttons the majority of the time.
Symmetrical design - too easy to pick the darn thing up upside down and have it not work.
False inputs on touch pad - too easy to swipe while holding.
Slow text input - voice control is nice but in most other instances it's very slow to input emails and passwords etc.

      • I was pleasantly surprised the first time a text entry box popped up on my apple tv and my iphone buzzed with a notification that I could use it instead for text entry. Email and password entry in 10seconds instead of 3mins on a screen everyone can see you typing into slowly…

Apple is not cheap, but if you buy into their ecosystem, a lot of stuff just works without having to set it up.

We have a $4000 sony smart TV and the remote is garbage, the Android OS is pretty slow, plex performance on it is mediocre. Would much rather have a $200 apple TV attached with Plex/Netflix. I've had a cheap Samsung SmartTV setup with a raspberry pi and KODI (with HDMI CEC for remote control with TV remote), and that was pretty sweet too. Built in netflix was good as well.

Sometimes its just nice to have a decent remote and consistency across TVs.

I agree with coxjon's comments on the remote, but you get used to it after a while. Touchpad is great for playing games if that's your thing.

  • OurApple TV died, and we are now using an Xbox One instead. We don't have a 4K TV (wish we did).

  • I am also waiting for a bargain to come up. I have the apple tv 4 and its amazing but i want to upgrade to the apple tv 4k to maximise my 4k tv viewing experience. They had a bargain 2 months ago in Binglee for the 32g priced ate 170 i think, too bad I missed it! Kindly give me a heads up if you come across a great deal. cheers!

  • Grabbed my 32gb 4K for $203 a few weeks ago from the eBay Plus 15% sale. I think you should wait and see what comes up.

  • For what it's worth I decided to buy a refurbished 4K 32GB Apple TV for $209 from the Apple store.

    Reasons for this are:

    a) Even though I bought the JB Hifi Vouchers for 15% off, it's still cheaper here.
    b) Shipping is included and we live regionally so that's a bonus.
    c) I can use the JB vouchers in the future to buy something else non-Apple when it's on special to effectively get a double discount.
    d) Purchasing through ShopBack will add $2.50 to my available balance. Once that balance hits $10 I get a $5 bonus.

Hope that helps someone, thanks for all the feedback. Looking forward to some quality streaming!
