eBay Scam MX500 1TB $67.62 listing removed

Think I've fallen for a scam as described here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/387117

I ordered an SSD on 26/6/18 from hyperman2000, a Crucial MX500 1TB for $67.62 after a 5% off code. Alarm bells should've been ringing as the cheapest price before was ~$250 but my greed got the better of me.

As in screenshots below the item listing in my ebay summary has always shown as:
"We had to remove this listing from the site and you're not required to complete the transaction. If you've already sent payment, the sale should process as normal and you don't have anything to worry about. If you have any questions about delivery, please check tracking or contact your seller. If you run into any trouble along the way eBay is here to help. Please visit the Resolution Centre to help resolve any problems you may encounter."

The payment was also shown as pending for the first three weeks or as far as I can remember on my paypal account. I thought it might have been cancelled but I was worried it being pending for so long. I checked back today and somehow the payment had gone through on the 17/7/18 a week ago.

EDIT: Wrong tracking number, there was none. An Intel SSD listing I did purchase on the 24/6/18 has changed to a crucial MX500 250gb listing which I got mixed up with.

I can't launch an eBay dispute at least on my mobile as the listing has been deleted. Never mind could do on 'ebay classic' on my phone, will see what happens.

So, something is normally about $300 and it is being sold for $67……

No alarm bells rang for you?
Not being a smartarse, but a genuine question.

I guess the excitement of the low price way clouding common sense. I was once bought 4 Razer deathadder mouse from seller in Thailand for $80 (all not each). Turn out all have serial number :). got my money back as seller was non responsive and I kept the item.

      • Something like that is not always a scam. I got sneakers for $32 delivered. Normal price $180. Genuine article - delivered in 3 days.

        • Hi, to add, the serial number was all the same and checking online on the difference on fake and original, it's obvious from the build quality - it's fake. Yes agree, a really good deal can be the real deal too.

      • Pretty much this, greed got the better of me. My own fault.

Whats the tracking number? Was it delivered to your suburb? Neither your paypal or ebay shots show a tracking number was lodged against the transaction …

  • Without a tracking number showing delivery to your suburb, you won't have any trouble getting your money back through eBay's MBG. Jump onto eBay's CS chat.

  • Open a PayPal case. DON'T select "Item not received" as PayPal will probably automatically close it as tracking says delivered. Choose "Arrived but not as described"

Use https://www.17track.net/en to see more tracking events.

    • +2

No, leave PayPal out of it for the moment, and definitely don't click on anything saying you've received it.

  • tracking number shown as delivered when I never received anything.

Check your front door and the surrounding for a safe drop.

    • Aus. Post tracking will tell you if it was delivered with safe drop.

  • OP, what's the tracking number the buyer sent you? As it's not in any of the screen shots you've posted, I assume they've only provided it when you've opened the dispute?

Also, have you had any communication from the seller?

Had a look at the seller's sales for the past two weeks…this isn't the account of a scammer, this is someone clearing out stuff they no longer use. You don't list a handful of computer games in the $20 - $100 range, but in the middle decide to scam someone out of $75 for an SSD - doesn't make sense.

As I asked above, has the seller said anything about the situation?

    • +2

Could easily be a cover, or a compromised account.

OP, if you don't get your money back, consider it a lesson learned. Lucky it was only $67 and not much more.

Nope - doesn't make sense in this instance.. Go take a look. I've seen plenty of dodgy stuff on eBay, and this all looks pretty normal.

        • -1

The price was 1/4 the normal price.
The transaction was pending on my PayPal account for 3 weeks with the order not being acknowledged.
          The listing was removed.
There was no tracking number, got mixed up there.

          Not dodgy?

        • @Vert93:

          a) People sell stuff too cheap on eBay all the time - nothing strange there. Unwanted presents/prizes etc - bought plenty of items like that myself. The same model SSD was sold by another seller, brand new as well, a week before your purchase, for $89, according to eBay's sales history.

          b) The seller has nothing to do with your PayPal account or transaction. Seller might have got a notice from saying payment is pending - we'll let you know when it's safe to send (happened to me on more than one occasion).

          c) eBay remove listings for all sorts of reasons. I've had a listing of mine taken down because I've used a manufacturer's photo to sell something brand new, and they've somehow discovered it and reported the listing for copyright violation.

          d) I'd say for a good third of the eBay purchases I make from private sellers don't supply the tracking number unless I ask for it.

Here's some stuff I find unusual though -

          1) eBay removed the listing at some point (you only say "item listing in my ebay summary has always shown as:
We had to remove this listing from the site and you're not required to complete the transaction") yet you didn't think to contact eBay and ask why? Instead, after a month you log onto OzB to ask the strangers here!?

          2) You had a PayPal transaction pending in your account for three weeks, yet rather than contact PayPal to find out why, you log onto OzB a month after making it, to ask the strangers here.

          3) You hear nothing from the seller at all and don't receive your item, so after one month you do the logical thing and log onto OzB to ask the strangers here what's going on.

You've made no effort to contact any of the parties involved in the transaction, haven't pursued any of the logical avenues of enquiry that it's obvious you need to follow up, and instead jump onto the scam bandwagon here on OzzyB, crying foul and threatening a chargeback - do you possess a shred of commonsense???

Perhaps it will turn out to be dodgy, perhaps not, but you're doing nothing to help your cause in handling it like this.

          @dm01:

Well as the payment was pending and the listing shown as ""We had to remove this listing from the site and you're not required to complete the transaction.".

From that I assumed the order was cancelled but it was just taking time to stop the payment too.

Honestly I completely forgot about this for the last two weeks, busy with work.

I'm posting this on ozbargain in case anyone is in a similar situation. The link for this item was posted in an ozbargain deal in the comments, can't remember the exact deal.

@Vert93: So you're prepared to label that seller as a scammer on a public forum, despite them having 100% positive feedback, positive comments from other buyers who purchased items around the same period of your purchase, several other sales to buyers since yours (i.e. eBay has left the seller's account active), because for several weeks your forgot about a cancelled eBay listing and subsequently never followed it up with the seller/eBay/PayPal when your payment was allowed to go through?

Have I got all of that right so far?

Meanwhile there's no tracking number….wait yes there is…wait, I'm mixed up with another purchase I made; you vaguely remember some some junk mail that may have been the "scam" item with the tracking number (binned as per standard procedure); you're posting all this because the item link was in some comments somewhere you can't recall…do you see what I'm getting at here?

Why don't you politely ask the mods to remove this thread, and post again when you actually have something concrete to share other than your conspiracy theory?

        • @dm01:

          Noted.

  • It happened to me before for a computer bag. A genuine bag was selling for $90 (I have a genuine one, and I like it) and I bought one for $25 on eBay. After I received the bag, I notice something is off. I did some photo comparison and file a dispute on eBay, which the listing had already been closed by eBay like yours. After 3 days, a full refund was issued. I ended up donating the fake bag to Sammy Seal.

    Tracking number is 33BWJ0017270.
Shown as delivered on 4/7/18. I vaguely remember some junk mail posted to my name around that time, could it have been that? Binned it straight away as I usually do.

Seller hasn't responded yet, only lodged the eBay case last night.

Could I do a card charge back, on my debit card so probably not I'd assume.

Thanks for all the help so far, lesson learnt if I do lose the money.

EDIT: Wrong tracking number, there was none. An Intel SSD listing I did purchase on the 24/6/18 has changed to a crucial MX500 250gb listing which I got mixed up with.

Message sent to the seller for never recieving the item, will see what happens.

Hey Vert, what's the latest on your SSD?

    • Full refund..

      • From the seller or from eBay? Did the seller say anything?

        • From eBay, the seller messaged eBay re the case and I was refunded 8 minutes later. Didn't message me.

        • @Vert93: Interesting. I wonder what was happening at their end of things? Glad to hear you got your money back, though.
