Where/How to Sell My 2000 Subaru Impreza That Is Gonna Cost Too Much to Get through RWC in Cairns, QLD?

So I have driven a 2000 Subaru Impreza Station Wagon up from Melbourne to Cairns, owned it for around 9 months.

Took it for a roadworthy check in Cairns with a view to sell it but it came back with a huge list of problems and the guy said it could cost around $2000 to get through. Doesn't seem to be worth paying that amount of money into it (it's done 280,000km) so what is the best way for me to get some money for it?

Thanks for any advice.

  • sell without rwc/rego

  • Actually can't sell registered cars in QLD without a RWC, so when's the car registered to? You can use it till the rego runs out, or cancel (and see if you can get a refund for the balance of the rego?) and then sell it.

Point being - you have to sell it unregistered if it doesn't have an RWC. As to how - eh, Gumtree probably if it's only a few thousand (or hundred) bucks. Cash only.

  • re register as a victorian car?

If your principal place of residence is Queensland and you own the vehicle then you can't keep it with an out of state registration. The police can and will fine you.

  • I always heard road worthiness checks vary widely depending on what mechanic you go to. So maybe get a second opinion?

I used to go to the grungier looking mechanic in the poorer neighbourhood for my '98 corolla's RWC because they are used to older cars. They also get more business by doing the bare minimum to pass rego than by trying to squeeze people with little money for extra work.

They always just checked my lights, looked under the bonnet, drove up the street and back, and then passed it.

    • if you're buyer/new owner that need rwc to register the car,

better chance of finding a mech willing to do dodgy rwc.

I have an email from a guy on an oil rig looking to pay cash for a car sight unseen for his son. I will pm you his email address.

  • See what the local wrecking yard will pay you for it?
