JB Hi-Fi Staff Lied to Not Do Price-Match (Epping, VIC)

So I was JB Hi-Fi in Epping on Wednesday for a stick blender, I asked a staff on the floor if they would do price match with another local store.

After the 1st attempt to refuse with the reason "it's an online store", I then showed her that they have 2 stores in VIC. She called up the store to check if they have stock available, even though the website said they have it in stock.

After calling the store, she turned around and said that the store told her they don't have the item in stock and would restock in a week or 2 so said she can't do price match.

Ok fine, I walked out of the store. Then I called up the local store and they told me they still have many in stock, even checked with online support, got email confirmation too.

Did anyone get the same issue with JB? Should I send a complaint to JB?

*I went to Harvey Norman, they happy to match the price, no question asked.

I love Ozbargain because I can read very interesting posts.

Sadly, this might not be one of those posts.

I love Ozbargain as it's becoming whingepool

  • Seems dodgy behaviour from the JB salesperson, but when you are on a sales-percentage income it is probably understandable.
I like that you stood by your research and didn't cave in to the tactic.

You got what you want in the end from a retailer that was happy to help,
If you don't like JB or are not happy with their service, don't shop from there in the future.

  • I walked out of the store. Then I called up the local store

The salesperson was dodgy for sure, but change the order of these - and go to another JB Hifi salesperson, and you woulda been fine.

So why not vote with your dollar and actually shop at the store you were originally price matching against? JB obviously don't want the sale.

    • They were a bit far from me so I tried the shops nearby first. Actually, the store I was price match with was Stan Cash/Billy Guyatts, they are pretty competitive for home appliances.

JB price matching is very inconsistent. There are 2 JB's in Brisbane CBD, I went to one to try and match QC35's and the girl flat denied it if we used gift cards, which is a joke.

Then went to the other one, and the guy was happy to oblige and put it straight through.

So probably good that HN got the business in this case, employees who deny it don't deserve the sale as they aren't following their policy.

We will enthusiastically match the price of an identically stocked competitor product. Negotiable deals are part of our everyday promise.

So much for 'gift cards are treated as money', yeah when it suits them.

Exactly right, we went through the process of price matching and she was like "No worries, what payment method are you using?".

We said gift cards and she instantly said No, guessing it's because she doesn't get commission (or less) off gift card funded sales, either way it's a joke as she didn't follow policy. It says nothing about not combining price matching and gift cards on the website.

        • My guess is they don’t price match it because they don’t have any competion. You can only use JB gift cards at JB

  • What did JB HIFI say when you contacted them about this?

What if the sales person that the JB HiFi staff called, looked up the wrong product or didn't actually check? :O

Did you get the same sales person when you called?!

In the last 12 months I’ve bought 1 item from JB, a HP sprocket plus portable photo printer. It retails for $229 everywhere basically, except officeworks where it is $227. I chose to buy from JB as it’s much closer than any officeworks. I didn’t ask about any deals nor did I try to bargain, but surprisingly, the salesperson said ‘let’s see if we can do a better price’. Ultimately, I left with the printer and 2 packets of ZINK paper (20 per packet), totalling $230, a saving of about $35, without needing to do anything. Despite the criticism JB get, from time to time they do surprise us, and I felt this staff member truly went above and beyond.

Correct, it is the staff, not JB.

  • Personally feel that JBHIFI is super hit and miss, I've gone to some that were super bad, one I just walked out on. But then I've been to others have had the friendliest sales person and one that even looked into getting me a discount when i was full fledged just going to buy at full price, no worries.

Honestly though, not worth getting hanged up over it, maybe put a complaint/suggestion online saying about the issue so that they can learn in the future what the policies are for the store and then move on.

(Also I don't go to Harvey Norman often and I dislike Gerry but sometimes they've been the most easiest I've dealt with and have occasionally got me the best negotiable deals).

    • Exactly the same situation for me; went in looking to pay full price, as everywhere else had pretty much the same price, and was given a healthy discount without asking, by a very friendly salesperson
