Optus Mobile Contract Ending - Recommend a Plan?

My 24mth contract with Optus expires September with my last handset repayment August 25.
I am currently paying $68pm for Unlimited Calls/Text and 1GB (!) data allowance

I have been looking at Kogan's 90 day plans but don't like Vodafone network as I am in a regional area. Have looked at Catch Connect 90 day but comments on their deal posts make me concerned about problems with porting and customer service. Have also looked at Spintel, Jeenee, Moose, Belong and the list goes on so I am confused. I have also considered Optus Prepaid 42 day plan but not sure that represents the best value.

Could someone help recommend a plan for me with no contract , minimum of 3gb + of data per month and unlimited calls/txt at a low price point? I don't need international.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks!

Belong, swap between $10/1GB and $40/15GB depending on how much data you have in your bank. Banked data lasts forever, so you don't have to worry about it expiring. And you can go up and down between $10 and $40 with no penalty.

For a more hands-on option stay on $10/1GB, and buy a few half price $40 Belong sims, activate them (use PayPal), and gift the data to your main account (after gifting, cancel them and remove the PayPal authorisation). When you find yourself running low, do this again. Besides Kogan and other dodgy operators this is probably the cheapest data (and not dodgy).

    • Thanks, that is a good option.

Oh and belong uses the telstra network so it should be good for your regional area - worst case scenario you blow $10 trying. Belong are better than optus where I am - I get no or very sporadic optus signal inside my work building but good to fair belong reception in the same place, never drops out, just becomes poor in some locations like some meeting rooms. Haven't tried full telstra for comparison, but still.

Yeah I think this is who I'll go with.

@dylo: just a heads up they don't have voicemail. They have voice to text.

        • @mbck: people keep saying that but I'm not sure why that's a bad thing. I used to hate having to listen to voice mail messages over and over trying to write down the details they said, and occasionally accidentally deleting it before I got it all down. Or losing the bit of paper! This way it is recording the message and writing the details down permanently all in 1 step for me. Sometimes it gets it wrong but you can usually work it out from the context.
Of course a service that gave you both would be even better - just in case the message comes from a private number, and they leave you a return phone number but the message2text garbles it.

        • Belong uses Telstra Wholesale, not the whole Telstra Network. This means that Telstra would still have slightly better coverage, and the beautiful 4GX speeds!

  • Outright

  • Note 9. Comes out in 3-4 weeks

Jeenee Mobile (Optus) - $35 per month unlimited local/national call/MS 10Gb of date and $300 of international calls. And this is month to month - have been with them for 18months now.

    • I am on their $9.95 per month plan with 1.2 Gig and it suites me fine. They also have a $22. p/m 5 Gig, do a 12 month contract with them and the $22 p/m includes 8 Gig Jeenee

I just signed up 365 days plan with Catch Connect, cost $189, 72Gb, (with 30% off, normally $270), I was with Optus, just ending 24 months contract like you,it only took less than 24 hours to ported my mobile from Optus to Catch Connect, Catch Connect uses Optus line as well, so far I am very happy with Catch Connect :)

    • Only really took me 2 minutes to port from Optus to Telstra. When it comes down to porting between the big 3, I think the speed is super quick. Not too sure about the smaller firms though.
