Thredbo vs Perisher. Which is the Better Ski Resort?

Ozbargain,

It's snow season and i'm keen on taking my boys to the snows. There won't be any flying to Switzerland or Canada, it's gonna be pure 100% Australian made snow. Which ski resort should i take them to, Thredbo or Perisher and why? Discuss…

The resort with the best snow conditions at the time of travel should be the winner.

Mt Selwyn is meant to be good for families.

I believe both have banned tobogganing from this season, so depending on the age of your kids and their skill level/experience, Selwyn or somewhere else may be a better option.

    • Any reason why? Perisher had really nice taboggan hill off to the side of the carpark.

    • No, only banned at Thredbo. Perisher have a dedicated area for it (banned from main slopes only)

      • Is that confirmed for this season?

I was taking my information from this article which includes the following quote apparently from the Perisher website:

Tobogganing is currently not available at Perisher. Toboggans are prohibited on all Perisher ski slopes. Tobogganing is dangerous and involves inherent risks.

Recent Facebook comments seem to indicate it is banned but may be not to be taken as gospel…

Edit: ABC article indicates it may be still allowed?? Very confusing, not sure why they don't just clarify this.

        • Perisher Website

Toboggans are prohibited on all Perisher ski slopes and should only be undertaken at the designated toboggan slope located beside Perisher Valley Car Park on Pipers Ridge. Tobogganing can be dangerous and like all alpine activities involves inherent risks. For your safety please obey all signage when tobogganing or on or about the toboggan slope. From time to time, the toboggan slope may be closed due to insufficient snow depth or inclement weather.

I've been to Thredbo (one time), Perisher(6 times) and 1x Selwyn(last week). There are pros and cons per place depending on your children's age and what you want. Below is my thought.
    1. Selwyn
    Pros:
-Excellent for tobogganing, ski tubing and first time skier or learner, not crowded, cheaper lift (you can get 50% off lift voucher from Groupon, without the voucher still cheaper)
    - Not many skiers so easy to park and eventually resulting in convenience when you need to come to your car(it may be big burden if you walk far distance wearing ski gears with your kids under very cold weather, especially very hard to find a parking space during peak season and school holiday season at the other places)
    Cons:
Poor eating place( no restaurant and very small canteen only), smelly toilet, not enough indoor rest area(I think there are around 10 tables next to toilet)
No accommodation in the resort, only a few nearby (around 30 min travel time)
Long queue for ski tubing (they closed selling ticket at 2 pm since it was very crowded during the school holiday weekend)
Around 20 minute more travel time than the others from Canberra and Sydney (Googlemap leaded me to a shortcut but it has some unpaved roads(unsure how long) – since my car is not a 4wd, I had to return back to alternative paved road towards Cooma after having almost 1 hour short cut driving due to encountering unexpected unpaved road- if you can drive this road it will be shorter than the others)
Less snow than the others, temperature might be slightly warmer.

    1. Perisher and Thredbo
      Pros:
A big resort(free shuttle from A to B ski place within Perisher) having many shops, restaurants, nice and modern facilities, many lifts and many lesson programs (including kids’), a big indoor rest area(even though we need to walk a bit), swimming pool and water park(Thredbo only)
Nice ski tubing if they open (only one time had been opened out of six times visits, not sure why they don’t open always).
Various activity, night ski, many accommodation nearby (within 30 min) and even inside of the resort (quite expensive though).
      More snow
      Cons:
Not enough car park- eventually you may need to walk a lot depending on your arrival time and day(during weekend before 8 am will be safe time to get a car park space close to the resort)
      Could be colder, especially Thredbo

    Enjoy!
