It couldn’t be that easy could it?

For starters call it a work trip instead of a work holiday.

  • Go to a conference related to your job

Unlikely to be able to claim it all, if you attach a holiday to it then you have to apportion the claim. e.g 7 day holiday, 3 days of work related then can claim 3/7 of costs (although usually for overseas trips you can also claim accomodation for day before and after due to travel).

    • Thank you, for the information, I guess I can!

    • wouldn't it be 3/10

10 day trip consisting of 7 day holiday and then 3 day conference etc.

      or

do you mean a 7 day holiday inclusive of the the 3 days work?

      • Sorry yes it was a bit ambiguous. The second option was what I was trying to say.

If you have to ask maybe you should rethink the idea

"What to Do to Get Enough Justification to Claim My Personal Holiday as a Work Holiday"

In the words of Ron Burgundy

    "That doesn't make sense"

  • I love the comments thanks team, if I was to attend conferences and workshops whilst on holiday I was hoping to try to claim parts of my holiday

    • You could do this. Attend a conference for a few days and then head off on holiday. Colleagues do this all the time. Then just claim the days you are at the conference. Food, accommodation, fees.

A lot of industries have conferences in fun places. Also, the conference won't go for the entire time and you'll have time to do activities/network.

AWS summit is soon in Vegas. Spend a few days networking then relax for a week.

You could also ask your manager if you could attend the conference and expense the flights and maybe part of the hotel.

      • Best if you can get work to pay for the flights since otherwise it is apportioned depending your percentage of work related activities.

Also ATO does not check if you didn't turn up to the conference, just that you paid and have receipts showing so.

pick 2 random conferences related to your job 1 week apart in similar locations, claim entire thing as impracticable to return home.

If it's out of the ordinary for your employment role then expect ATO systems to pick up on this for a closer look.

The ATO is very experienced in dealing with tight arses wanting to claim a so called conference whilst on a personal holiday

    • Some employers let you salary sacrifice holidays - so it is possible to get a tax deduction on a holiday

Standard every year there a bunch of weird arse questions which amount to tax evasion. You're asking an internet forum do they support your illogical conclusion that you can claim a tax deduction for a holiday. No you cannot. Perhaps you should message the other guy trying to claim a suitcase as a tax deduction or the other guy who drove in his car to a few work jobs. Completing your tax return is not a choose your own adventure where you can claim anything you can think might applies.
