VicRoads Updated Vehicle Standards for Window Tinting, Additional Headlights and Brake Lights (VIC)

Window tinting can now be 0% all-round for commercial cars, and non-commercial cars 20% VLT. This is good news for auto enthusiasts.

According to a Facebook post, this is what 20% rear and 35% front looks like
35% was the previous maximum legal tint allowed.

Other changes:

  1. Windows tinting
Provided that at least a side rear vision mirror is fitted to each side of a vehicle, the minimum visible light transmittance (VLT) for windows located behind the driver changes to:
0% for vehicles primarily designed for the carriage of goods, or
20% for all other light vehicles

  2. Additional headlights
Additional headlights will no longer have to be fitted in pairs permit the fitment of LED light bars. Up to 4 additional headlights will be allowed to be fitted to a vehicle, provided that they are fitted in a way so that they are facing forward and symmetrical in relation to the vehicle’s centre line.

  3. Fitting brake lights
To retain the design value of vintage and historical vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1973, a light fitted to a vehicle that has dual functions as a brake light and a direction indicator light will be treated as a brake light.

The change does not apply to vehicles manufactured after 1 January 1973.

    Doesnt look safe to me.

    • The inside looking out at 20% seems fine to me.

  • The original post is a bit misleading. It reads as though you can have 20% all round in a non-commercial car. I'll think you'll find that change only applies for windows located behind the driver, and the windows level/forward of the driver will still have the existing requirement. As best as I can tell, it is just a maximum tint level increase from 35% to 20% to be in line with international standards.

"The change does not apply to vehicles manufactured after 1 January 1973."

    • Yeah i read that too …… so just really old cars ? seems like it wont affect many.

    • I think that restriction only applies to the part about using tail lights as indicators. Once again, because of the OP's layout it became misleading, applying conditions to everything and not just specific changes.

  • Still not possible to tint the windshield :( !

The top 15% is allowed. There are already enough drivers on the road with 0% visibility :).

  • A relaxation is always welcome. Seems like a sensible change. Surprising coming from Victoria.
