What's The Average Fee for Car Key Duplication/ Cheapest Place?

Hi I would like to know what's the average fee for only cutting a copy of a car key (not the chip only cutting the key)

I always thought it was $20 (which I think is a fair price) My Toyota Corolla 2005 key was done at Mister Minit Point Cook VIC (I provided the spare key that I got from eBay from like $2)

I've since moved to Greensborough VIC and at the Greensborough Plaza, there are three key cutting service each on every floor.

I told them I would provide the spare
Level 3 Clockworks: $22
Level 2 Mister Minit: $36
Level 1 Independent: $7 (Guy told me to provide the spare even before I said it. I was very surprised)

I asked Mister Minit again on a different day (when the owner wasn't there) out of curiousity: $220 (I assume he is including copying the chip too)

I know Bunnings doesn't cut car keys so any idea for the cheapest place or is $20 the average?

  • Yeah - around $20 is the normal price for basically any key I've had cut, even your everyday door locks/etc. Granted I only asked the few key cutting places I walk past on a daily basis, so no actual bargain hunting for that price.

With a chip I've had car keys duplicated for about $120, so $220 is on the high side, depending on how new your car key is I guess.

Based on the three prices you have provided , the average is $21.67

  • Out of curiosity, do newer car keys need like some specialized cutter? I have only one copy of my 2013 Suzuki which looks like a regular old key and none of the usual key cutting stores agree to cut it. They just look at the key and say na they cant do it.

    • Only having 1 key for your car is a very risky game!

    • There are some keys which are marked as "don't duplicate without property authorization", but I haven't personally come across these for car key blades, mostly for strata keys, business keys and other more secure keys.

  • it's normal dumb car keys right ?

why bunnings doesn't cut it ?

Cos you can't drive someone else's house away

    My experience;

Regarding the chipped / remote keys, I bought one from a car place in Queensland through Ebay for I think $35.
(But you have to program it yourself, via the car)

Bunnings don't usually cut double sided keys (car) as their gear is set up for
basic house keys (single sided), however, if you're prepared to risk the key, they'll have a crack (well they did in my instance)
    and it worked fine. $5-$6.

    So about $40-50.

      haha excuse the pun

    • How do you program it yourself?

      • Depends on the car. Some manufacturers have a specific sequence of key on/off, doors open/close, etc to put the car into pairing mode. Some manufacturers just need software and an original key

  • What's the cheapest price people have got at a Mr Minit for cutting/making spare house keys?
