Hey folks, so I'm starting this thread cause I figure there will be a lot of people try to mod a 2/3DS Tonight to play home brew etc. I haven't done it before but precursory googling suggests its not that hard.
In general, don't do any firmware updates till you know what your doing and have a read here.

It's pretty much the same, and links back to 3ds.guide at the end for finalising, but I think it's clearer and more comprehensive.

You can do it for free on all firmware versions now. Frogminer solves the issue. It's now free for every single firmware available (if not, you just update to the most recent firmware and there's a free way of getting LUMA3D.
Literally no negatives to updating firmware, so don't worry.
Which version are the ones sold from big w? Specifically the 2DS with Mario Kart 7 included, should we install that first then follow the guide or do it after
If the Mario Kart 7 is a download code, you can sell it.

Actually the 3DS never installs firmware updates automatically. It will always download them and then prompt you to install it each time you turn it on.

Also if you're on 11.4 or higher there's no harm in updating - you would have to update to do the hard $2 method anyway (to buy a game from the eShop)

I assume you can play any 3ds or 2ds game once done?
You need a DS flashcart to play DS games but you can play any 3DS game (but not new 3DS exclusive games if you have an old model). You can play some DS games without a flashcart but not very well (being emulated instead of played natively)
You don't need a ds flashcart. You can play .nds games from the sd card now with twilight launcher

I followed the guide last week on a 3ds. It isn’t hard, but it is meticulous.
My only stumbling block was trying to install the menu without updating the firmware. It didn’t run o very early firmware.
It works a treat.
I happened to have an r4i card, so am playing ds games too.
After you installed CFW there was no reason to not update. The guide tells you to. There are things that won't work properly on a lower firmware.
apparently all the forums say not to update to 11.8 and following the guide mine did so…unsure as to the implications with freeshop however.
@Quantumcat, Thanks for all your help and advice, I've decided that I'm just gonna sleep on it a few days before I decide what to do, in the meantime should I be right to just use it as normal out of the box and download the included mario kart 7? It won't prevent me doing anything later?
It's currently on firmware 7 or 8, can't remember exactly.
Eshop will probably need to update to download mariokart - very high chance require you to update firmware to a higher version - dont do it because it makes modding way harder - if it updates you will need to hardmod or get a flash cart and another soft modded 3ds.
+1 to qwerty (yes you'll have to update to use the eShop), just sell the Mario Kart download code once you're all set up and have it installed on your console through other means
Though if you are on 11.4 or higher and you don't want to sell it or give it to a friend you can go ahead and update and redeem the code. A flashcart is one way to mod an 11.4+ console but there's another way by buying a DSiWare game that is a little harder
im not going to redeem it, i thought it was linked to the console somehow. I have a wiiu, I think i have wiiu dollars on it ss well.. I wonder how many nintendo fans don't already have mario kart…
my one is7.1.0-16e.just follows 3ds.hacksguide step by step, went to 3ds sound to play the wma, but always pop up a error msg.any suggestions?
What kind of error message? You can also try https://3ds.hacks.guide/installing-boot9strap-(browser). This should work on anything 9.2 or less with a browser

When that was happening to me, I had to rename otherapp1, dropping the number to just "otherapp"

Have a look at the first post in the Noob Paradise thread. It will tell you how to install freeShop. Be quick as freeShop may not work for very much longer.

now playing River City game through the HANS app, but to launch homebrew I have run it through the sound app each time I turn on the console, is that normal?
Don't follow video guides, they get outdated. HANS has been outdated since 2016.
Follow https://3ds.guide. If you have the homebrew launcher already you should be able to skip to https://3ds.guide/installing-boot9strap-(homebrew-launcher) although you will need the files from https://3ds.guide/homebrew-launcher-(soundhax)

You can also launch emulators such as GBA, DS etc through the home brew launcher. Also can get custom themes, softmodding the 3DS is great. Just make sure you have enough space on your sd card. I’m getting a 128gb micro sd for my new 3DS XL that I haven’t touched in a year or so

can 11.6.0-39 new 3ds xl be jailbreaked? i just hacked my old 2ds, not that hard. i find out 2 good condition new 3ds xl on gumtree, both firmware is 11.6.-39.worth a try?

It has USA, EUR, JPN, KOR, CHN, TWN.
There is no Australia, does it matter what I choose?
If you bought your 3DS in Australia then its EUR as we are the same region as Europe/UK.

No reason to stay offline - you'll only be banned if you play a game online before release or cheat online. 11.8 means you will soon no longer be able to download & install from CDN but that's no biggie.
An old 3DS, old 2DS, new 3DS and new 3DS XL may come on a firmware that is low enough to hack for free (11.3 or less)
New 2DS XL will not - they are minimum of 11.4
