Daniel Ricciardo to Move to Renault Team. What Do We Think?

Just woke up to the news that Ricciardo is leaving Red Bull. Is this a good decision?

What is going to happen to Sainz?

Ok had sometine to think. I hope it is a good decision which Ricciardo obviously is hopeing as well.

He will be the No.1 driver well at least that is what he would be wanting in his contract. As long as the Renault motors can get some more pace and reliability he should be good. Too many times this year there have been failures.

If RB didn't offer Ric at least the same as Max then Ric had no choice, but to leave. As soon as Max had his contract locked in it wasn't really good for Ric within the team. There was always going to be bias to Max as he is the up and coming driver.

Gasly to Red Bull. Or Sainz, but unlikey due to clash with Max.

Talk about shake up drivers with the lower teams.

    Is this a good decision?

Might be better than a Red Bull using a Honda engine, who knows?

Whatever the speed potential of a Verstappen/Gasly pairing, neither have the F1 experience to be able to provide the sort of driver feedback that Red Bull will desperately need to turn the Honda-engined Red Bull chassis configuration into a consistent front-runner. Barring a miracle, 2019 will be a trial by fire for Verstappen's mercurial temperament and the likelihood of some 'throwing toys out of the pram' episodes will be high, in my view.

Unlikely though it may sound, I reckon they'd probably do better to promote Hartley into the team! At the time he was dropped from their Young Driver program, Hartley's main Red Bull work was in the simulator at the factory, testing differing aero configurations, new ideas, etc., and Mark Webber commented that the racing team was surprised and sorry to lose him, as his feedback was consistently helpful to them.

      • @iseenya Yeah interesting about Hartley. Gasly has consistently done better then him though, so you would think he would be ahead of Hartley. Does it mean Robert Kubica may get a ride. He would have the feedback ability. That would be interesting.

Not sure. How could you possibly know? Could be a disaster or a triumph. That will be decided entirely by Renault's efforts- Ricciardo will do his part.

The Honda engine at Red Bull could be a disaster too. At least at Renault he will be the main man and there won't be any silly buggers sneaky favouritism that seems to work against Aussies in F1.

  • I don't know, I'm having too much fun watching NASCAR.

    • Is that the sport where there are no corners?

      • What are you talking about, there's at least one corner?

        • +1

          One biiiiig long corner. :)

  • He couldn't keep going with Red Bull. Breath of fresh air, but the car probably isn't as good. I think there will be fireworks at Red Bull next year with their 2 drivers together again…

  • i thought no matter what driver , red bull always end up on podium

    • Only if Mercedes or Ferrai don't get there first. If the Renault motor doesn't get better, its likely Max in the RedBull will get the points. That's assuming the Honda motors are ok. Which it should. They are going ok for now. Still not up there fully with the Mercs for Ferrais,

      • The irony here is that Ric is moving partly due to issues with the RB team's engines…. which are Renault power plants. And just as RB are moving to Honda engines, Ric is moving to Renault.

        • @highanddry He will be the no 1 driver at Renault. Renault will only need to supply motors to their team and McLaren, so more development into the main team likely. They just need more power and reliability.

In the end it could be like Webber, who never really managed to get into a team to be able to show his full potential.

          Hope not though.

  • Is this a good decision?

Reminds me of Hamilton moving from McLaren to Mercedes which no one saw coming and many questioned as at the time McLaren were much faster than Mercedes. That of course turned out the be the best decision Hamilton ever made. In any case now seems like a good time to jump ship with the issues this year and the move to Honda which seems like a risky move.

What is going to happen to Sainz?

Sainz to McLaren they reckon is most likely, to replace Alonso if he retires or to partner him if not as Vandoorne has looked pretty average. Sainz could replace Ricciardo but BBC said Gasly is more likely.

Good news for Force India fans as before this it was expected Ocon would go to Renault and in turn Stroll would go from Williams to Force India. Although they might still need the cash and do it or something similar anyway depending what happens there in the next few weeks.

There needs to be an option that doesn't impact the poll but just for button pushing people like me :D

@pennypincher98. Cant update pole with another section. Poll pushers. Ill have to remember next time.

  • What happened to him supposedly moving to Ferrari?

    • +1

@adr8 They weren't interested. They still prefer Raikkonen as he's a team player to Vettle. Also they wouldn't have given him equal standing with Vettle

  • Charles Leclerc to Ferrari, Kimi to Sauber.

  • Must have been planned for awhile. Shame Ricky wasn't given a go. I have a feeling DC hasnt had much luck and has missed out on a chance for a championship. In next 2 years
Renault will do ok, but suspect Saubers, Haas, and RP Force India will do better. Redbull I dont know. I think the Honda motors will be duds.

  • Vettel leaving Ferrai at the end of 2020, could be an opening for Dan

    • That is now the speculation. A Leclerc Ricci team would be awesome.

      • Going to McLaren

        • A Noris Danny combo. What an absolute bomb. Out to get my McLaren gear now. But if a waste now on the Renault stuff.

        • Who's going to Ferrari. Sainz?

          • @Melb69: Not confirmed but it's looking like that's the case.

            Edit - just confirmed.

            • @sss333: Sainz has the last laugh over Danny after he was booted from RB drivers while on loan to Renault.
