Are There Any Photography Apprentice Programs

Hi All,

I was wondering if there are any Photography apprentice programs where I can work over the weekends(bcz I have job on weekdays).

I know how to operate my DSLR(not just auto model) has been using it for a very long time.

I want to improve my photography and exposed to professional photography as well.

PS: request to moderator is that please remove the post if it not the right platform to ask this. Thanks

That time of the night eh?

  • Do you know how to use Av mode? Or the one with the little flower on it.

    • Av is auto and the one with little flower on it is another auto mode for macro photography. Correct me if I am wrong about the second one

    • Av, also know as Aperture Priority mode, allows you to set/fix the aperture of the lens and lets the camera adjust the shutter speed and ISO (if set to AUTO) depending on ambient light. First google search result explains it in more detail here

If you wanna jump on the free apprenticeship training train. You're going to need to choose from the skills shortage list https://docs.jobs.gov.au/documents/skill-shortage-list-austr….

As for photography as a career, use Youtube, the free university to learn more about color, composition, filters, lighting, etc. Make sure you have an instagram account, now go out and shoot as many photos as you can. Join a stock photo site, become a contributor and upload your photos. Get paid if people like them, boom. Money from photography.

Here is the Australian Apprenticeships website for anybody who might like to look up information about apprenticeships and traineeships in Australia. Your closest possibility for an actual traineeship in this area would be working in the desktop publishing area / graphic design. Still, that's not going to actually give you what you were looking for - a traineeship is a full time ongoing arrangement.

Your best bet is to try to establish an arrangement with somebody who works as professional photographer and see if you can shadow them. If you have a personal contact with a photographer this will be easier but don't expect them to tell you about how to operate your camera - you would just be being exposed to their working conditions and to experience how they relate to clients etc. You could try to contact an organisation like Pixiefoto to ask for some work experience but again, they won't be teaching you how to improve your camera skills, it would be more about the business side of the job, along with working with clients etc.

IMO both of the above would be highly unlikely and you are going to be much more likely to achieve what you are looking for by joining a photography club, creating your own social media presence and developing your business skills to be able to gain some work as a freelance photographer.

I’d start off by joining your local photography club. Many actually offer their own courses for pretty much nothing, but members of the clubs could be involved in their own courses.

Even just going to member nights allows you to learn so much as many have activity nights where members share their skills and teach you things and also they have competitions so people submit their own work and someone goes through each image individually and provides comments.

I've sat through paid courses, club meetings, YouTube instructionals, self proclaimed experts, retail "specialists"…

Club meetings with professional members are by far the most valuable. There isn't a sales agenda and everyone is just there in the spirit of advancing their skills.

Photographers are good company too. A good photographer always has interesting obaervations and tend to be optimists.

  • Check out the creativelive website as they have free educational streams to watch but will have to purchase to download and watch.
Aside from that the best way to learn is just to practice and keep practicing. Most jobs advertised out there are usually either photographing schools, cars or realestate and the santa/baby pop up studios.

The whole industry is oversaturated with photographers though so its cringe worthy when I see intern/volunteer photography positions advertised as they only exploit a highly exploited industry. So many offering to shoot for free and so many expecting free work/labour that these days on social media when someone posts they are looking for photographers, models, hair and makeup artists or any other creative the first question asked is if they will be paid. It feels 4 out of 5 times they are wanting someone to do it free
