Solid Bookshelf Speakers on a Budget

Hey everyone,

I’ve started to get myself into the audio scene lately and had been looking around for some good quality bookshelf speakers for a price from around $50-100. I currently have the Yamaha GX-505 stereo system which is a 3 way system with ~5 inch woofer, mid driver and tweeter and about 80 Watts max RMS. I would like new speakers to have a greater bass response and improved clarity in mids and highs as I feel these speakers sounding jumbled when listening to songs with lots going on. An example is when listening to the chorus of U2’s vertigo it sounds a bit like blaring but some pieces like Stephen Stills’ “Ballad of Hollis Brown” still sound very nice. I had my eyes on some micro lab Solo 6c’s but they got sold and don’t have any idea how I should go about finding speakers that would sound nice but also fairly cheap. I do enjoy a bit of bass and so was hopefully looking for speakers with a 6.5 inch woofer. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Cheers

  • My amp has minimum 6 ohms impedance with ~80 Watts per channel (numbers are a bit shady as it is from 2001 and different sources give different specs)

Everyone says they sound as good as speakers 3x the price.
(I have the ones with the built-in amp. They're excellent.)

Oh, I see now the passive speakers are out of stock.
You probably don't want to pay extra for active speakers if you're happy with your current amp. Hopefully their rep, who posts on OzBargain occasionally, can tell us how long before they have a new model.

    • +1 for Voll, bought the active speakers and the sub during the last sale and I'm very happy with mine.

    • +1 for Voll aftersales service

1 side no sound , they sent courier to pick it up for free returns

    • Cheers for the suggestion.
On the page it says it has a 4 inch woofer. Wouldn’t that produce less bass than my current 5 inch woofer then?

It's not the size that counts, it's how you use it.

        • Hahahha that's what she said.

      • +1 for voll. Bought passive speakers and SMSL Q5 Pro Amp during last sale. Very happy with the set up.

Next door neighbour once complained about too much bass (without subwoofer) even at 75% volume.

  • Take a look at Edifier R1280DB.
Bought a pair just a few months back, $120. That was with a 20% off eBay code.
    Great speakers.
