hmmm, usually the health insurance of a visitor is bought and arranged prior to departure from origin country…

    you mean travel insurance ?

    • No they're different. Some visa's require insurance for the length of their stay here. I have an auntie here from overseas over the age of 80 staying for one year and all quotes were over 1k.

The insurance company will send a letter to immigration confirming the cover.

    • No, its health insurance

  • BUPA or Allianz, depending on length of stay and if they'll be coming back often. Allianz is cheaper but won't allow you to suspend their membership.

  • Vistor health insurance is completely different to regular health insurance as the health fund pays 100% of the scheduled fee. (For Australian residents they only pay 25% with medicare paying 75%). So you cant just take out regular health insurance.

$1000 for 1 year for an 80 year old seems pretty good value.

I worked at medibank 10 years ago and medibank was the only company that provided this type of cover back then, I don't know if this is still the case or not.

  • I highly recommend buying such insurance. I know someone who brought her parents over from China for a couple of months. The father suddenly fell ill and needed an operation and a week's stay in hospital. The bill stretched into tens of thousands of dollars.

    • sounds like travel insurance ?

      • No, its health insurance

    • This is mandatory for visitors to Australia who're elderly or otherwise have medical conditions, not optional. And yeah, it's to prevent the possibility of someone needing urgent medical care (which would obviously not be denied) and then not repaying it or not having the ability to repay it.
