Booked Flight without Middle Name - Do I Cancel?

Hi,

I recently booked flights to Europe with China Eastern during the late December - early January period.

I would never normally fly with them but the tickets were $881 return so I thought I would roll the dice.

When booking the third-party site only asked for first and last names. There was no space or mention of middle names.

I thought it was a bit unusually as I know the name of the ticket needs to match the passport ID. Reading other forums it seems like many people have never had an issue.

It does seem that the Chinese airlines enforce the middle name rule (probably so they have save/gain money from you)

Has anyone flown the China Eastern without the middle name? Has it been an issue?

I'm thinking about just risking it..

Never put my middle name when I flew with them and had no issues.

    • Thanks for letting me know. Was this in 2018? No issues when going through PVG immigration?

Absolutely a non-issue. Do not worry about it as long as first and last name are correct.

It might matter for things like Visa application but definitely not flights.

Put your first & mid name in First name box, next time. No need to thx me.

I never use my middle name on flights.

Only ever had an issue with Malindo in Malaysia on a domestic flight at a small airport, when I got to Kuala Lumpur took another domestic flight with them without an issue. I take about 70-80+ flights a year, and that one time in half a decade, so don't fuss about it.

  • i once used my middle name even though I was never given one.

Call the airline and ask them instead of asking people here who will largely be making educated guesses

The airlines always say that the ticket and the passport need to match identically and that I need to pay for another ticket. It's just the line they use but it's very rarely enforced for a missing middle name. I was looking for any information OzBargainers who had travelled with China Eastern could give me from their personal experience not from the generic airline answer.

What did China Eastern say when you called them about this?

    • See answer above.

    • Usually: ni hao ma, tamade.

      • Ting hao de, xie xie, ni ne?

        • Moshi moshi.

In which part you do not understand what Tomato means?

          Pok gai.

You could say that about any forum that isn't related to bargain purchasing. This is OzBargain not Ozinsuranceadvice, Ozroadrules, OzAMA's etc. It's posted under the travel forum and it's your choice to respond or not.

          @Yummy:

          You're very welcome

  • Can't speak for China Eastern specifically, but I once accidentally forgot to enter my middle name with Jetstar flying trans-tasman.

I contacted them on Facebook, and their social media team said that it shouldn't matter as long as the first and last name match - but they'd be happy to correct my booking if I can send a photo of my passport.

I think you'll be fine, but if you'd like the peace of mind you may want to try and contact them (or the third party who you booked with).

  • I got no first name on Passport, hopefully I'll be fine travelling to Japan
