Telstra Cable vs ADSL connection

Hello Ozbargainers,

I signed up Telstra Home Internet Connect Plus online two weeks ago, cable is indicated for my new address.

A technician visited a week ago but can't find cable connections, he contacted backend office, they confirmed no cable as well then left without doing anything.

Called Telstra on the same day, was told that I need to switch to ADSL2 and will receive a call from commercial team last week (never happened).

Got on Telstra chat this morning to follow up, they confirmed my order is in and getting internet this week. (I was happy too early.)

Finally got a call from Telstra (India team), still trying to connect me through cable?? Told me will call me in half an hour an hour ago.

I understand it is faster and would prefer to go cable, but living on mobile internet is killing me now, and feels desperate for be connected first. Any suggested where to go?

Update: got a call saying cable is another 1-2 weeks, and possible longer, the photo is taken for the building (but so?)

    yeah, wait for cable

ask telstra give you free 4g failover for the moment

    • thank you, will call and ask for free 4g failover

I haven't got a modem from Telstra yet

Ask them to send you a Telstra smart modem.

        • on the chat again, they even don't want to send me a modem before sort other things out…

I won't be on 4G failover for now

        • @fujay: I'd suggest going to a jb hifi store and signing up to this then. You'll get in two or three days if the order goes through.

op, send me your order #, i'll have a look at it

    I'd wait.

ADSL is as good as dialup.

    • Depends on your distance really

i'm going to guess, without knowing any further information than what op has provided, is that he lives in a unit (that may/may not) have been sub-divided. The main address IS cable serviceable, but the units are not. Extremely common nowadays, and you need a commercial quote from Telstra to do it but it's not cheap and with NBN coming, they're pretty hesitant to do it.

Friend lives in a block of 4 units in the above scenario. Commercial quote came back at $7k to run cable. Needed to get approval from all tenants to do it too but you could get body corporate to kick in some

yes, in a block of 20…the units looks like have cable ports, but not connected though

I don't know too much on it to comment further

in my experience, it's quite rare for a block of 20 units to have cable infrastructure

        • So what's the best way to go, supasaiyan?

          @fujay:

I can see that some works need to be undertaken to upgrade the tap, I've put in an email to a contact to see if he can give me further information

        • @supasaiyan:
          Thanks, looking forward to it!

          any updates?

This was the case for me. What we did was sign up for a free Foxtel 3 month trial that included free installation, they came out and ran a cable from the box into the unit for us, and then just needed a cheap splitter cable to get it to work with Telstra cable internet.

      • thank you for the tip, AustriaBargain!

sounds like need to search a free Foxtel deal

        • Won't work anymore as all foxtel connections are via satellite.

        • @thargelios: well, another window shuts…

  • Same thing happened to me. Although 4 sales people, online and the cable connections team, said that cable will be fine, as we were the front property of 3 townhouses, so had direct street acccess.

Despite their being existing conduit for the phone line AND a free port on the tap, that in theory could be used, they couldn't only connect our property. Or rather, couldn't assign the already assigned tap of the parent property to our townhouse.

Neighbor behind us didn't care for a land connection and the third property is empty.

So Telstra said, either you all have it or none of you have it, even though we have a free port available. Logic.
They could be making 100 a month on that not used port, but instead it just sits there unused.

Teltra are useless and caused us to move into a townhouse without proper internet (i checked 4 times with 4 different people if it would be an issue getting installed).

    • that's what frustrated me, someone tell you one thing, then another call tells you a different story…the only thing makes it slightly better is at least it feels like they are TRYING to help…not like other companies service team

how you end up get connected @thargelios?

      • Sorry @fujay not sure why I didn't get a notification of your reply.

Sure they tried to help. But it didn't change anything.

I'm using Ovo mobile broadband. Only option.
. Well, i could try get optus cable installed. They've told me it's possible, but….optus cable, isn't known to be great.

  • Have you looked at 5G wireless providers in your area? Same speeds as high end NBN….up to 50mps and 100mps. I'm with Pentanet here in Perth and they are brilliant..but the is a dish installation fee.

    • it's a bit hard for me to imagine dish installation in a unit, strata approval alone could delay me a month

    • 5g is here already ? wow!
