Coles Fuel Vouchers - why are receipts still required?

I've been a Woolies shopper for years, and their fuel vouchers are linked to their Everyday rewards card. i.e.
1. Scan rewards card at grocery checkout
2. Discount voucher gets applied to your card
3. Scan rewards card at petrol checkout
4. Fuel voucher discount is applied to your fuel bill

I recently started using Coles (for their Coles mini collectibles), and they require you to hang on to your supermarket receipt to use the fuel voucher at the petrol station.
I'm wondering why Coles doesn't do the same and link it to their Flybuys card? Seems like a no brainer to me, and they would increase the use of their flybuys card.

I'm trying to go electronic and reduce reliance on paper as it's better for the environment but seems like Coles is still stuck in the shop-a-docket era…

Haha yeah ok maybe I overplayed the environment card but I still hate carrying unnecessary bits of paper around.
With woollies everyday rewards I've got it linked to my Apple wallet so I just need my iPhone - don't even need the physical card anymore.

this is a good feature by coles. i like it. the fuel docket is not tied to the account.

    • Good point… I guess that's one good thing about this scheme…

  • +7

I find the 7-11 fuel is usually cheaper even with the discount.

    • Hmm I must look into this… is it cheaper across the board or just for some fuel types? I usually use Premium 98

    • Not if you get 10c offer on your flybuys and have 4c docket

      • Even then they can still be more expensive - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/386150

The 10c isn’t all the time is it unless you spend $20 in store?

        • Hes referring to the 10c offf activated offers. With 4c fuel voucher u get 14c off.

If they give you the offer itself it is great. No queues as most goto cheap competitors. But ofc it isnt always there. Big month of it every week until this week i didnt get one.

you do not need flybuys to get the fuel discount at coles, as PissLUR states the docket is not tied to an account meaning you can give it away.

  • +2

I don't hang on to my supermarket receipt, I just cut the docket and discard the receipt.

    • Good tip…

yeah the local indie servo is always cheaper than coles/woolies even with the docket. they also have cheaper bbq refills

Coles is a rip off, always more expensive than every other service station around them.

    • Except they're not in Sydney CBD.

      • Maybe in your area. In mine they are consistently 3c higher at a minimum. 7 Eleven is the cheapest for ozbargainers majority of the time.

      • Just did a fuelsearch near my place, they rated 5th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd and 24th (out of 24)

    • Yup. The one on Milton Rd is almost always the first to raise their prices, last to lower them and stick ULP98 up at $1.83/L. I'm surprised anyone gives them business.

      • Where is the Shell on Milton Rd? Or do you mean Coronation Drive?

        • Oops yeah meant the one on Coro Dve in Milton lol

Probably the same reason coles don't have a Woolworths money equivalent app for their e-gift cards. Coles does not like making things easy for their customers

  • +1

Use your phone to scan all dockets/discount codes etc and keep them in the same way you do with your loyalty cards, using GooglePay or another app like Stocard. It only takes seconds, and they always be with you when you need them.

Can you do this with docket? Are you not supposed to hand over the physical docket on the counter?

      • +1

        It's just a barcode…

      • You can, I've done that.

    • Ooo, now that's a good idea.
Although I probably won't bother… after this Coles mini thing is over I'm going back to Woolies.

Don't stick with one of the big two if you like saving money. Make sure you check their specials every week. I often visit both on the same day as they're under the same roof in my shopping centre. Moreover, if you stop shopping at one of them, it will very soon start approaching you with some bonus point promotions etc.

  • On another note the woolies reward one eeks me as I haven't seen a way to display when saved fuel vouchers expire.

Coles is bit behind Woolies in Technology adoption. Though I agree with one of the posts above that the Voucher is not linked to your account and few prefer it that way. But it is a loss for Coles by not forcing Customers not to swipe their loyalty cards.

I use the Woolies App for Giftcards and it has got improved over the period. No need for those off plastic cards or the emails of eCards.

But Coles seems to still prefer people scanning their ecards at the Checkout..

    • I don't think so.Coles eGC is a lot more advanced than Woolies'.It is easier to scan barcode than to input numbers. Also,in the event your remaining balance is insufficient to cover the payment,it can detect the amount and allows partial payment instantly so you do not need the APP to track balance.

Due to some members share or lose their loyalty cards numbers, card numbers may be misused by others. For Woolies, fuel vouchers can be used by others, same with rewards. You can find these stories in Woolies Rewards forum topic last year. For flybuys, you can not. That also explain why there are far more flybuys partners than Woolies Rewards.Because flybuys card numbers are a lot securer when shared or open to other parties.

  • The Coles servo's around my area are always the most expensive. The Caltex is one of the cheaper ones plus I get 5c discount being a NRMA member.

  • Coles is pretty backward with this — they could have integrated it a decade ago when Woolworths started the rewards/fuel discount scheme. I generally don't use Coles for that reason, it's just more inconvenient to get the benefit of the system, and FlyBuys doesn't give any real benefits anyway, whereas Woolies Rewards gives me regular discounts on groceries and free products.

Coles used to have the ShopADocket discounts on the back of their receipts, but our local Coles discontinued that recently, and now just has Coles/Liquorland ads.

The only positive with ye olde paper receipts from Coles, is that they are accepted by a lot of independent service stations, such as Liberty and United Fuel, some take discount vouchers from any supermarket, in order to take a slice of the Shell(Coles) market.
