eBay Buyer with Zero Rating and Recently Opened Account on 10th Aug. I Am Bit Skeptical, Please Advise from Experience

I have sold Breville Smart Grinder on eBay yesterday, the buyer has Zero rating in Vietnam and has recently opened eBay account on 10th Aug.

He has given me Melbourne address for shipping. I haven't received any money, so I will not send the items yet. But I am concerned, when I send the items, can the buyer contact the paypal and get refund. If this happen would I need to refund the money?

What are my options?

Looking for some advice from my fellow OzBargainers.

Cheers

    Zero rating in Vietnam

    and

has given me Melbourne address for shipping

First, wait for Paypal payment to come through and see what the buyer's address on Paypal is.

And then don't send, cancel transaction in eBay under "problem with address" (I think that's the option).

    • "problem with address" <—yes, that's the one.

Its funny because I created a US account the other day with a fake address to utilize this deal - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/395635

    So yeah, dunno…

A message should be sent to the buyer in Vietnam to confirm the Australian shipping address. You can ask them to provide the phone number of the recipient in Australia so you can confirm the buyer is genuine. You can contact the buyer by phone to confirm legitimacy.

Under paypal rules if the address specified is Australian then you are obligated to send the item and so long as you send it the aadress nominated you are covered. If they email you to change the addrress and you send it to the address which is different to the paypal one you will not be protected.

It could just be that they were buying something for a relative of the relative could be taking it to Vietnam for them.

  • Thanks Guys,

I has asked the buyer to confirm the Australian phone number and also waiting for the payment from the buyer. My concern is if they make the payment and I send the item, later ask for refund from paypal. What are my options and how can I say the buyer is not genuine.

    Thanks again

  • Just received reply from the buyer:

My cell phone +84903651169 in VN, imessage, whatsapp & viber

I told our friend in Aus who would pay and get the goods for me then delivery to VN At the add I sent

Lol. Looks like a scam, sounds like a scam, smells like a scam.

Report the user to eBay for scam.

Otherwise, just wait it out. 4 days afterwards the sale has finished and the buyer hasn't paid, you can cancel the transaction safely and either offer a second chance offer to another user or just relist.

  • Yeah contact eBay support and ask them to cancel so it doesn’t look bad on you. Tell the buyer you can’t post overseas.

Then re list your item and this time configure the settings properly so no overseas buyers and no first timers.

How to block "no first timers". I now blocked the no overseas but not getting any option for first timers.

      • There’s a way to do it. I can’t look from my phone but I’ll try and remember to have a look tomorrow.

  • I don't send any items overseas, period, simply because it opens up a massive list of potential issues that come in conjunction with your 'standard issues' that you would experience from a local scammer. You did the right thing in barring overseas buyers, so any attempted scam coming from overseas must use an Australian address, which means you can cancel the sale without repercussion (mismatched addresses).

For future reference, you can block zero feedback buyers (its in one of the final options with/near payment preferences on the app). I would also recommend recording a video of you packing and sealing the item into the postage box with the address already labelled. Also include any shots of the item in the video if it may be necessary. For example, I used to sell expensive perfumes on eBay, and would record me unboxing the product (they don't come sealed) to show the bottle in full, and giving a full overview of the box, before packing it in a box, sealing it with tape, and showing how much it weighs on the scales. This saved me over a thousand dollars in potential returns, with plenty of buyers trying to claim that I sent counterfeit products (all but one dropped the PayPal case after I warned them of the existence of my video - it's funny how quickly someone might realise that your previous 5 messages detailing the authenticity were correct, as soon as you mention a video!) The only one who didn't drop it had their claim denied after my video was provided.
