Use Your Borders vouchers now

Just a quick tip for those holding Borders vouchers.

Borders and Angus & Robertson are under voluntary administration so you will need to use your vouchers. Apparently they have already made it difficult for gift card holders to redeem their cards making you spend 3x more than the voucher's value. http://perthhacks.blogspot.com/2011/02/borders-gift-cards-ne…

  • Agree with the advice.

A contrast to the $60 of books (Popular Penguins) plus $100 of Magazines (better value than most of their books) this household enjoyed for $0 over the last 3 months. On the one hand their books were overpriced and too few people were buying them, and on the other their marketing department, by accident rather than design, were giving stuff away for free.

    • So it was all the OzBers with the $20 vouchers and the free Popular Penguins who pushed them over the edge. Well done guys! :P

  • yeah the $20 voucher for VIP holders was a bit stupid really.. only complaining because I didn't get one but then again, if I did get one, it probably wouldn't have been used yet by now. Rebel sport did the same thing, wonder how they are going.

  • wow, they really are struggling

  • Despite no talk of it that I have seen, I wonder if Australia - the "non-mining" part at least, might go into recession in 2011.

After such negativity I think I should now confine myself to bargain-hunting and positive comments for a while :)

  • wonder how dymocks is doing…..

    • Trembling in fear I would guess at the thought they are next.

  • Jerks.

  • Is that even legal?? Changing the terms and conditions at their will at anytime?

    • Not legal , but it's also not legal to sue them now that they're under Administration..
They could refuse all vouchers… This is an unhappy compromise, but the best given the circumstances.

  • I thought Borders were in trouble when they cut the big cd & dvd sections from their stores. It showed they were having trouble selling inventory.

I wondered if they could survive just on their book sales.

Hopefully they can just close the weakest stores & keep trading in some of the better locations. I really like visiting their stores. They are great places to browse. Browsing for books online is not the same experience at all…

i would say that dymocks, sanity, those type of stores are next

    • I wanted Sanity to disappear for 10+ years. Then I went to the Crown Casino one and got some band t-shirts for $5, pink headphones for $2 and random oddities for under a buck. Now I visit regularly because they seem to clear everything ridiculously cheap.

      • So they could rename the store in Crown Casino, INSanity? Since everything is so cheap?

nice try with the joke, better luck next time :)

    • Yeah the wealthy & successful founder, Brett Blundy, sold Sanity to the managers 18 months ago … he knew when to call it a day.

      Poor managers!

  • wth i still have $50 gift card so now i have to spend $150 before i can use the card?

    • I wonder if any of those sites online are silly enough to give you $43 or so for them at the moment?

      • doubt it
cardlimbo has removed both A&R as well as Borders

        • BWAHAHAH!

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/25-Angus-Robertson-Borders-Gift-Card-… (Not laughing at the above poster, just found this on fleabay, thought it was funny)

        • @ bendertiger

          LOL

          @ POWERevolution

put it on ebay, you would expect it to go up for approx $40(if lucky)
or just go to borders and buy something you want

        • Cardlimbo are selling them again for 50% off. With A&R you need to spend 2x the amount of the gift card to use it, Borders is 3x.

  • Here is The Age's article and Border's official site which reports double spend not triple.

As far as I can tell, there is nothing stopping you from from purchasing whatever you need from Borders to reach your needed quota, and then immediately return the items you don't need. As far as I can see they are still required to give refunds for products as per their refund policy as well as in accordance with state laws.

    • thats a pretty sneaky way of doing it. you may need to purchase a few extra books given the up to 40% off sale till sunday.

      • As opposed to A&R/Borders screwing the customer on gift cards?

If you paid by cash or eftpos/credit card you will get a refund by the same method.

I don't think you will get a cash refund for payment by gift card though. You will get a Borders 'exchange card', which is basically store credit to equal value. I've had this experience at Borders with a product return on an item I'd paid for by a gift card. I think the only difference between their exchange card & the gift card was it had to be used within 6 months (rather than within 12 months for gift cards).
