Good EDC backpack with padded laptop section

Hi,

I am looking for a good backpack for taking to work. I’m interested in getting into being a bit of a prepper or a full blown one (eventually). I’d like to start with a backpack that can carry a bit of stuff on a day to day basis.

It must have:
some side pockets where my umbrella can stick out and possibly a drink bottle (these are usually a draw string style but I’ve found that on my current backpack the ‘lock’ has cut into the ‘string’) so draw string is acceptable but if you’ve got reviews let me know.

a padded laptop section

Space to carry perhaps some rope, a torch, maybe flint and striker, maybe a water bladder might be cool too.

Let me know what you’ve got and any deals that are going to extend out past 23/8 when I potentially have a little cash.

Oh, the current one I’m liking is the 5.11 Covrt 18.

I'm using a North Face Pivoter I got as a gift - should fit your bill nicely - there is a good review of it here https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/our-favorite-laptop-backpa…

    Macgyver?

    • Haha no, maybe?? Just thinking about being prepared.

  • +1

I recently posted a thread on something similar. I eventually went with an Oakley Link Pack. The prepper alternative wouldve been the Oakley Link Pack Miltac which is effectively the same thing but tacticool. I got this on sale at the Oakley store (DFO Homebush) from $140 to $70. The biggest thing I liked about the bag was the bottom of the bag zips out and becomes a dirty gear compartment with an internal pouch separating the main compartment from top and bottom. As I was wanting to use it for work and gym, the dirty gear shoe compartment was great. It also has a laptop section that sits behind your back that is padded and separate from the main compartment, opening zipper is on the side of the bag and not very visible.

Also, Im not into the prepping stuff, my pack was only for work and gym. But wouldnt you want the most incomspicuous backpack as a prepper? wearing something tacticool just signals, "hey look at me, I might have stuff, or know things".

    • That’s part of the point. I don’t want something that’s too out of place for my commute in to work, but can carry a few extras with features of my current backpack that I enjoy.

That Oakley one looks pretty good. Cheaper too!

  • Have a look at North Face Borealis or the Surge. I'm rocking an older model Surge, fits 15" laptop no probs. Has compartments where I carry a leatherman and cords (bottom zipper), small torch. Also has bottle pockets which are invaluable IMO for stuffing in random snack bars/drink bottles. Wish they came with waist belt pockets like hiking packs. Doesn't look too technical and fits in urban environment.

    • Ive noticed the North Face Australia range is so limited. All the good bags are in the US.
