How Well Does Google Know You

If you are curious go to https://myactivity.google.com/myactivity, especially https://www.google.com/maps/timeline. But we still need to give Google some credit because they at least give you the option to opt out.

Basically, if it knew me any better it would be making me breakfast.

      Probably eggs.

    • "Hey google, what should I have for breakfast today?

What's the discussion here? You can't just open up a thread with a link to another site. You need to ask a question or post a statement.
    This feels like an advertisement.

I got carried away at the computer this morning and didn't get up for a drink or even a toilet break. But I know that when I do, I'll be rewarded with the cool, refreshing taste of Lipton Iced Tea.

  • Based on my targeted advertising, not very well.

I remember the first time I found this out, was super creepy, can even guess your work place and home pretty easily along with assumed public transport and stuff you take.

I also have a google home at home, and you can go through the history and listen to the recordings, as it actually legit has your recorded voice saved for all things you ask.

Kind of sucks though, to turn any of this stuff off pretty much means you lose some major features, I don't remember which one it is but I'm pretty sure a location one or history one or something I think if I switch off for my google account my google home refuses to answer any information or questions.

Using google basically means no privacy now.

Apparently I think there was a scandal recently where people found that turning off location history Google will still track you, you just don't get the history or something. I think it was under fire from the new GDPR stuff? A similar story can be seen here: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-08-17/google-makes-changes-a…

Yes, Google was making it look like you turned off location data even when you hadn't because the whole place is apparently run by "rogue engineers" who just happen to blatantly violate your privacy (just kidding - location is one of the most important pieces of data to Google because it shows where you work and shop).

Creepily Google removed the "Don't be evil" phrase from their mission statement a few months ago - it was meaningless but why would you remove it? - and has since been becoming increasingly aggressived in it's data collection and attempts to share it across all services.

Oh and they made a demo search engine for China that allows full censorship, aren't they wonderful?

Do you use Google Maps and search for direction? If so, why would you be surprised? It's like your Amazon searches, purchases and the following recommendations. It's not rocket science!

    • A lot of people I know find it super creepy when they find out. I guess because I'm in the industry it didn't surprise me at all and I'd already pieced it together for how they figure a bunch of stuff out. I'm a bit uncomfortable losing all the privacy, but I realise the conveniences come at a 'price'. From a technology perspective, I really like what a lot of companies do - from a 'citizen' or privacy perspective, not so much.

Location history is always interesting. The ocean being covered in dots.

  • Funny how my timeline shows "No Visited Places" yet gives me directions to work, soccer field, home etc "based on my timeline"

    But the real question is.

HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOURSELF.

Without that you cant judge how well Google knows you.

  • Google should have a page where they try guess things about you based on your information that they have

    • That'd be kinda cool/interesting to see…

Maybe the new CAPTCHA will be that - and you answer yes or no, further training their algorithms? They can expand it to your friends (cos they know who they are), and have your friends try and answer as well. This would help them figure out which answers are fake answers. It would also let them figure out which friends are 'better' friends, then it could target you with ads for products those 'good' friends would like, as you're probably more likely to spend more on your good friends.
      Ah, the possibilities!

      • I like how in the end it all comes down to getting me to spend more money :P

  • I suspect most companies will be doing a lot of things most people didn't realise. Any idea how much Amaysim (and their sub-companies) do? It's … not very 'privacy friendly'.

  • i'd happily buy a phone that is not so smart that it wants to track my every action, but still has a browser etc. sort of like an android phone but with dementia. does it exist?

if you remove all the google apps from an android phone, does it become non-tracking?

    • Maybe Lineage OS if you have a compatible phone?

  • I am far more wholesome than I thought.
