Download YouTube for free

I’ve heard that it’s possible and legal to download YouTube videos for free if it’s for personal use only.

If this is true, how do you do so?

I presume that there would still be adds in the videos hence why it’s legal.

I’m using Windows 10 if that matters

The reason we are looking at this is for inflight entertainment for the kids

You need to email YouTube a Stat Dec (signed by a Justice of the Peace or Pharmacist) stating that the video is for personal use for each video you download from YouTube. Otherwise YouTube will contact your ISP and have your internet speed reduced to 1500kbps for the rest of the month (shaping speed).

I use 4K video downloader, Wikipedia description.
If I'm using my mobile I'll use Online Video Converter.
Both options have the ability to choose the quality of the video to download.
There's no ads once the video is downloaded.

    Hope this helps :).

    Edit:

You might like to checkout Vdownloader, it's an all in one video search and download application.

      Edit

Yes op it's legal to download YouTube videos.

  • There's websites, browser extensions, applications that claim to do this …

… and then there's youtube-dl, a free open sores CLI application that actually works all the time.

There might be a gui if you're struggling with CLI and you can queue etc, google is your friend.

    • got to watch out for those "open sores".

obviously he didn't use any anti-virus.

    is your google broken?

    • +1

No google works fine for me, just don’t know which sites are legitimate and won’t be riddled with malware

      • There are plenty of YouTube download sites, where you provide a url to a video, and they convert it for you to whatever format. Don't know if they are specifically illegal to use, but it is against YouTube's terms of service to download videos (though plenty of people include snippets of other YouTube videos in their videos so…)

I don't think they would be riddled with malware, but use an adblock and antivirus if you're concerned.

Or just go with blwnhr's suggestion below and sign up for the paid service for your holiday, particularly if you want to download lots of small videos. It'll probably be a lot easier

  • On WinXP, Firefox 52.9, this is great ->
Video DownloadHelper 6.3.3, Should work with most Windows.

Glad to verify it is legal for personal use.

    • I loved XP really long time (offline game machine still has XP), but geez!

Come to Win7 for a shred of online security at least.

  • We used to use icecream recorder and download kids videos, then put on to iPad for car trips, appts, etc. It's free on Windows 10 so you could try that.
But now we get netflix unmetered on Optus plan we don't need to record youtube. Kids watched Netflix pretty much from Brisbane to Bowen on our last big road trip ;-)

A lot of useless and troll responses here. Allow me to help.

The only legal way to download for offline is to have YouTube Premium at a cost of $14.99/mo.
    https://www.youtube.com/premium

A better way is to get Google Play Music which gives you a Spotify equivalent AND you get YouTube Premium included, all for only $11.99/mo. You can get a family plan for multiple devices for $17.99/mo.

If you only want it for one holiday you could probably get a free trial. This 90-day code might still work.

      The only legal way

This is incorrect. Youtube Premium is the only way specifically allowed under Youtube Terms and Conditions. But breaching a website's Terms and Conditions is not "illegal". Calling it illegal is misleading and unnecessarily alarmist.

      • So it wouldn’t be deemed piracy? (Thinking back to the FBI WARNINGS on VHS rentals in the 90s)

        • +1

It's definitely not piracy. By watching the Youtube video, you have to locally cache it, which means making a copy on your computer. Downloading it is basically keeping that copy, not even making an extra copy.

        • @HighAndDry:

It seems that YouTube Premium doesn't allow downloading of videos to a laptop (downloads only possible to mobile devices).

Also, it seems that that Australia isn't listed as one of the countries that allows downloading of YouTube Videos as per YouTube help.

        • @Pretten: Allowed by whom? YouTube? They don't set the law of the land. Download Youtube videos to your heart's content. Nothing will happen.

        • @HighAndDry:

I'm meaning from the YouTube Premium Account (I thought I'ld try the free trial subscription approach, but it doesn't deliver the goods).

Looks like I need to go 3rd Party.

        • @Pretten: Sure, but I've literally being saying there's absolutely no need to go through Youtube premium in the first place. If you can't, well I guess that's one more reason you probably shouldn't…

    • If you sign up for Google Play Music, it seems as though you can't use same email address to receive 30 day free trial

  • Use "Videoder" app.. It's very simple and various downloading options are available. They have android version and Windows pc version (recently launched, so you may now find all features still you can download most of the videos). I'm not sure about IOS version. Unfortunately you can't find app on playstore as its violating Google terms. But you can download from their official website. You can even watch videos without any adds in between. You can login with your YouTube account details to comment/like or save the videos… I'm using it personally from last 3 years. No issues for me….

  • If you can afford a server farm to which you could download YouTube…

actually the OP is right, a lot of the sites now have pop ups, ads and malware. im actually not sure what site to recommend now ??

    • +1

I find that Ghostery manages to nullify most of those. This one

      https://www.onlinevideoconverter.com/video-converter

objects to ad blockers [ I can understand why] but ghostery takes the sting out of the occasional re-direct [usually injected by the adware supplier :-/] and having your browser set to open links in a new tab means they can be stomped toot sweet.
The only annoyance is that it always sets "mp3" as default when converting a new URl but it has a good range of video and audio formats.

      • +1

yeah actually that was the one I tried and a weird pop up came up.

  • Most of time I have used the youtube app on the phone or get from the store like CHplay, iStore though, sometimes from apknite or apkpure if the app get crashed with other apps. I thinkk it is legal for sure guys.

  • I usually ensave website to down most of youtube video tho, it works great. You also can try  apknite all video downloader app, it helps too.

youtube to mp4, Hands down the best service I use this site regularly.
