In The Market for a Baby Monitor & Camera

Hi all

In the market for a baby monitor. In way over my head and have tried to research but end up more confused. Anyone been down this road lately and can share a bargain?!

Comments

  • ibaby works really well

  • I have 3 kids. I tried a baby monitor with the first. It was annoying. We used it for 2 days and got rid of it.

What are you wanting from the monitor? How do you think it will assist you as a parent?

  • Spend $50 on an audio only baby monitor - pretty much all you’ll need. I also bought a $30 Xiaomi IP camera with night vision I could connect to my phone.

    • I second this. Video is often terrible quality.

I'd go against the above and suggest a video monitor. We had one and it was so damn handy to know if we needed to go in or not. Was good to see if they self-settled

No need for fancy or a huge screen, just whatever fits your budget. Ours had like a 2.5" screen and no wifi for phone access, but it did the job

    • I agree. Sometimes you just want to have a look and make sure the baby didnt roll over on their tummy and might struggle to breath.

      • And see if they're standing up and playing with something within arms reach lol lil shits!

Hey, we got the Hellobaby 3.2inch baby monitor from Amazon, it retails just over $100. I’ve been using one for 5months now, also bough one for the grandparents place. Highly recommended.

It’s not not perfect, however it’s great value and has so many great features that pricer models have at a fraction of the price.
I wouldn’t recommend the Xiaomi that others mentioned, it’s really hastle to use and doesn’t always work. It also means your phone app has to be running the whole time.
Having the dedicated monitor is worth spending the additional $50 for.

The only flaws I noticed so far, the battery runs flat after 2-3hrs vs the the advertised 6hrs. So best to keep it plugged in.
And on some occations the wireless signal seems to disrupt my wifi speaker which I use for white noise. Normally restarting solves the issues.

    Good luck

    • I also bought a Xiaomi cam for that purpose, but didnt end up using it after a couple of times because it keeps losing connection and is just too much of a hassle to set up over and over again.

arlo baby video quality is pretty good from my experience. on the pricey end though for what it is. no screen (have to buy separately) but can connect on phone/tablet and share with multiple users

depending where u want to mount it, additional wall stand may be required
i found it cheaper to just order it from overseas (US) but have to weigh up pricing based on fx

How much you paid to get it from the US?

  • The main thing you want is the VOX feature. This means unless the baby is crying you don't hear it, because babies actually make a lot of little noises when they sleep and you don't need to hear them.

We have oricom audio monitor which works really well and doesn't pick up much incidental noise.

We also have the oricom video monitor, the range on it is crap it wouldn't go 15 meters through 4 walls in small/medium size house. (We bought the audio monitor because the range was so crap on this one) It is useful to have a video monitor as you can see if the child is lying down, sitting or standing.

The oricom audio monitor had accidental damage (our fault) and we bought a vtech as we couldn't get hold of the oricom, the vtech is a peice of crap, the vox feature is crap and it goes off with every little noise. It was so bad that we hunted around and managed to buy an oricom.

  • We bought an Angelcare movement sensor AC401, when our son was a baby. Supplemented that when he was a bit older with the d-link baby camera.

  • Thanks all for the above. Every bit helps

Spare phone/tablet in the room with a FB video call (or similar) to your phone?

  • We have oricom. Its expensive and rubbish. Imo security cams are best

Ended up buying the Hellobaby 3.2" monitor. The reviews and price were good enough for me. Thanks again for the above all!

    • hi @bemybubble, I'm now in the same boat and in the market. Care to share your experience with the Hellobaby? Tossing up between this and arlobaby/dlink

      Cheers

    • Hi, do you mind sharing your experience with the monitor? In the market looking at the same item too.

I have a vtech video monitor. I would definetly recommend getting one with a video as now my little peanut is rolling over it's good to watch him and be able to see what hes doing. A few times hes been quiet but stuck on his belly so if it weren't for the video I wouldn't have known.

  • Second on the video monitor. The baby being quiet doesn't always guarantee they're okay. But it might vary per kid too. We use our extra arlo pro as a baby monitor and always had the peace of mind since, lol. We just find it a bit risky since it's dependent to the internet and can be hacked, i wonder why people go hacking baby monitors nowadays, too creepy!
