Best Way of Exiting Optus Postpaid Plan on Contract Completion

Hi,

My 24 month contract with Optus ($65 p.m. for S7) is ending in the first week of September. My plan includes a $20 discount for 24 months. So the plan price will rise to $85.

What is the right way of porting out to Belong prepaid avoiding any fees/charges after my contract ends? I have read on OZB somewhere that I should first change to Optus prepaid and then port out. Should I change to Prepaid on the last day of my contract?

Thanks for your help guys.

  • I was on the exact plan as yourself. I just ported out to telstra BYO deal at JB Hifi 3 days after contract ended and paid my final bill and was sweet.

    • So what did you pay for 3 days post-contract?

      • Nothing…. they said i was clear and paid out. The reason for this is cuz you pay a month in advance at the start of your contract and forfeit that. So i guess to maximise it is maybe do the change over closer to end of the following month after your contract ends

        • Oh, I was thinking of saving those $65 that was paid in advance.

        • There shouldn't be any forfeiture on a postpay plan. Any unused amount should be refunded after the contract has ended.

  • I'll be in this exact same situation (same plan/phone) but finishing this Saturday and have a prepaid Belong ready to go that I picked up a few weeks ago (50% off).

I'll let you know how I go with my porting across back here.

I actually ported a number for a friend from a Telstra to Belong plan last month and it took around 8 minutes from the moment I submitted the request to when the belong sim was able to make/receive calls so I'm interested to see how fast it ports across from Optus. Wish me luck

    • I ported numbers twice. Once it completed in 10 minutes as expected. The other one port request took 3 days and it was because the port request was submitted on Friday evening close to 5 p.m.

Good luck and do share your experience.

      • Also doing the same , contract ends Sunday, porting to Belong.

    • +1

I ported from Optus to Belong yesterday. I requested the port at 1.53pm & it was finalised by 1.57pm. Fastest port I've done to date.

    • Okay folks - ported out earlier today (Saturday) at around 11:00'ish.. Installed app, created account. Was stuck on 'please wait creating account / setting up screen' for about 7 minutes so exited app. Phone still had signal so tried making call, not registered on network, stuck in belong sim, up and running so took about 10 minutes to port across.

  • How funny, I also have the same phone and plan ending in a few weeks.

So the plan price will rise to $85

Just a question on this statement - I thought that our phones would be paid off after the 24 month period, so plan should drop by $50 a month (or whatever the phone component is)?

I haven't been on a contract like this for a long time though, so maybe my thought is wrong?

    • You will be paying for $85 per month.

I'm in the same, and the contract states that the plan is $85 per month, with Optus subsidising the handset repayments, and you get $20 off for 24 months.

      Once that's up, it's $85.

      • You are right. The plan cost is $85p.m.

  • If you're happy with Optus, you can recontract SIM Only 30GB for $36 for 12 months.

The exit fee will be $45 x months remaining (that's what Optus subsidised), but if you're recontracting, the cust service rep said the payment can be spread across 3 months.

    • Thanks for the info. I am going to try Belong because of the international minutes.

  • My experience is that you call them in advance that you would like to switch to prepaid after the contract has ended. Then you can port it out.

  • For anyone interested, I talked to Optus chat. The person told me that I can switch to Prepaid on the last day of the contract without incurring any plan exit fees. The "First-bill" amount will be adjusted in the final bill. I have saved the chat transcript and going to convert to Prepaid on the said day.
