The Surge is as good Lords of the Fallen in the future as it can be. The developers could not have put the formula into a science fiction scenario much better. Blasting opponents with big energy blows is fun, tearing their limbs off is a joy that will be rewarded later with new upgrades. That's what motivates the player to go outside again, knock down a few more enemies and unlock the next little improvement. Your character development doesn't necessarily feel like you're moving up levels, it's more of an evolution. You unscrew the leg section, put the arm section on it, unlock the new weapon upgrade and suddenly you realize that you can now kill the opponents of the first few minutes of play like pathetic flies. That's very satisfying. It just feels good. And that's what makes The Surge a good game. The combat system may be expandable. But in a gameplay-fixed game like this, it's the sheer fun that counts. And you will have it. Promised.
