Automatic Transmission Has a Bit of a Clunk

I have a 2005 sedan with around 150k klms. I had the auto transmission serviced around a year ago but a few months ago it started having a bit of a clunk only when slowing down and its changing down from second to first gear. Its more noticeable when you are breaking. All other changes up and down are smooth. Is anything to be worried about?

What did your mechanic say when you spoke to them about it?

Probably some bs about needing a complete rebuild in the figure of around 2 to 3k, when if it was really the issue they could probably get a replacement gearbox for $700 from a wreckers and maybe $500 install. Lucky they asked here first for advice from people that have had similar experiences.

      • OP can go for a replacement gearbox from the wreckers for $700 and try to get someone to install it for $500. I can understand a mechanic not wanting to do this though, because there's no way for them to check the condition of that used gearbox, and guess who'll be blamed if it falls apart sooner than expected?

      mechanic says BIG JOB!!!

      MONEY COME COME !!

  • I've had exactly these symptoms for my auto-trans (although when going from 3rd down to 2nd) for years in my car - an older Merc. It's never been a problem. Annoying but not painful enough to cough up $2k to replace it with a reco transmission.

Could just need new fluid and filter kit.

Which model is it? It could be a problem with the ECU putting the timing off.

It maybe problematic of 2005 sedans.

    • Are wagons ok?

      • no they are worse, better to just part out everything that isn't a 2005 Coupe

  • the last service most likely atf + filter change

AT is very temperamental with atf , so make sure the correct fluid were used

if it never had atf change prior, then the last service might have caused the problem (there's a rule on don't do atf change if AT hasn't been taken care of ; will last longer that way)

can try a quick fix by squirt a bottle of lucas into AT (without changing atf)

(profanity) hell I hate posts like these..

Give us details about the bloody car, not just 2005 Sedan.

Its more noticeable when you are breaking

It sounds like the whole transmission is breaking!

Slowing down your car is called braking

Its more noticeable when you are breaking

Probably something to do with whatever you are breaking. Stop breaking it and the problem may go away. Or fix all the things you have broken and it may never happen again.

  • Clunking/shudder in the driveline on coasting or slowing down… Might be a time to check the diff. A lot of the time, people think the clunking is in the trans, but it ends up being a failing diff.

Without knowing anything about the car, no other ideas

  • My car has always had a clunk sound in the auto transmission and can hear it when changing gear on a hill, I stopped worrying about it. But get it checked if you are worried.

  • Sell or trade in to buy a new one if you so scare, now a lot of good car around.

There might be good cars around but clearly no good English around.

Because you are unable to identify the make/model/sub model of the car, any technical advice will not help you much.

  • Start with the simple and cheap fixes first..
Disconnect the negative terminal from your battery and leave for 15 min or so. Resets the computer which controls the shift pattern in your auto.. (if it has that feature in the ecu?).

  • Sorry its a 2005 v6 3ltr Camry sedan. Had it for 11yrs and its been really reliable. The transmission was serviced at a transmission “specialist”, i was intending to ring them soon about it and hopefully get some thoughts from the forum to be a little more informed before speaking to the mechanic.

    1. Find out where clunk is coming from;
    2. Identify the part that is causing the clunk; and then either
      a. Fix or replace the part that is causing the clunk; or
      b. Get your mechanic to fix or replace the part; or
      c. Sell the car on gumtree.

    Close thread.

  • Might not be an internal problem. Could just be an engine or gearbox mount.
