Discounted Food and Other Perishables from The Y Waste Food App

Moved to Forum: Original Link

So I think this is a great idea and they seem to have some big names on board already. Basically any food or other perishables from shops that would normally be thrown out at the end of the day can be purchased through the app at discounted prices. For example a box of pies in Sydney for $2.90 or a pizza for $5 in Brisbane. You can see a video of how it works here https://youtu.be/ReY9HLLhgbM.

Also for every meal you purchase through the app for yourself, another meal will be donated to help someone in need.

  • Any reviews from users? I know there was one similar a while back, 'Too good to go' or something? Would be interesting to see what this one is like

It works, I know it’s lame to plug you own shit but I’ve tried a good 50% merchants and we normally feed a fam of three for like $10 for takeaway or $10 groceries to last a week

This belongs in the forums, it is not a bargain…

    • +2

I agree. No bargain listed, just a notification of a (good looking) service.

jV Why are you so negative son? We are trying to get deals for you isn’t that what this forum is about?

Thank you all for your feedback and support. This is a start up idea and it’s been underway for a few months. It will only get better, and please be patient as we refine the process. Here is a video that we produced recently to explain the process, support the merchants as they support us and patronize the, with or without ywaste as some also donate through us to those in need and suffer from food insecurity and they are doing a great thing. It's not a deal, it's a forum post, that's why it was moved… Read the posting rules.

    • Yes ofarm and about life are god on it and ofarm has organic box for $10

      • life are god on it

        Which God?

      • Typo.what I mean to say is ofarm and about life are on it and fairly good options and the model for grocery stories, especially organic is to do a $10 grocery box for $30 and have consumers know about these places, have a meal whilst they are there and just be okay with whatever comes up, some days it would be $50-$60 worth of value, I’ve had wagyu and smoked salmon in a box and some days it be $25 but respect the business who is doing at below cost of their premium products and support them in other ways such as paying stuff and full price. It’s good practice and supports the ecosystem that supports us.

  • Just had a look. $6 for an indian dish at the end of the day. Kinda meh, food court takeaways always have them for about $4-$5 and looks like this is a random choice of whatever is left. The other include some bakery items for $9, chicken and salad for $6 etc. I dunno, might be worth a try but don't think it will be that great.

    • Agreed. The price listed is no real incentive for old food.

      • Depends on the place. Some deals are better than others, and this is not the perfect world. Choose the ones that appeal to you. One mans bread is another mans bones

    • Bombday duck or those $6 curries will serve larger portions or two choices compared to normal standard pricing and these are normally shops which don’t do last minute sales

An old pizza for 5 dollars, what a bargain.

    • Wonder if they'll put Domino's out of business?

    • Not sure how they end up getting 'already made', yet 'unsold' pizzas?

Are these the ones that have been dropped on the floor, or ones that customers sent back??

      • Just to calirfy it’s all unsold stock so no

Food scrapings, stuffed dropped on floor. It’s been a year in the process

Ultimately there will be a market for this. But it needs your support rather than what goes wrong.
whole idea is to create a sustainable ecosystem. Most customer will support the premises but up indivual.

    • Don’t know which pizza, but it’s based on retail value so u gotta account for rent, expresses, what they retail at sounds fair.

  • +3

Bought something and will test it out later today.
Will let you know how it goes. Wish me luck.

    • Post pics :). Interested to see how generous they are. From what I see so far, prices seem high and sounds like it could be pretty random in terms of the amount/what you get.

      • It is random but we’ve had big growth last week since we went viral and merchants are being trained, please bear with us until all merchants are on the same page

  • +4

The prices reflect the fact that most places would rather chuck out food than devalue their product against regular customers who pay full price.

Can't see this being very successful even if their hearts are in the right place.

    • Time will tell. There’s a lot more to it then you see. I know this forum is all about bargains and I’ve meet some of you in the meetup in Sydney last year. I have been following this group a while and always thinking how we can provide a deal website which isn’t sustainable. As humans, especially in this forum where is bargain driven we look at what’s in it for me, but there’s a deeper layer to this and the numbers work out. Keen for feedback and thanks for your 8 treat and support。

  • Would recommend this app. There are a couple of places near where I work which I have gotten a late lunch. Very large serves at a great price. The only con is that at the four places I've used it, the staff have been unsure how to process with the app so it's taken a few minutes.

Why is that a 'con'? or do you mean the staff member was Con?

    • Cheers for the support. Bear in mind it’s new, a lot of staff don’t get It and take time. After 4-5 pickups it’s good. Thanks bro! Where did u go?

Overall pretty happy with the app.
Bought the Melbourne CBD bakery for $10 and got the following amount of food.

    • Thanks for the pic.. Yeah good buy for 10 bucks!

    • Nice.. what time did you get that?

      • The app tells you when

        • yes thanks - just wanted to know for that particular bakery..

        • @superm86:

          That is a good bakery.

    • Thanks for saving the food bro!

  • Thanks for all the interest and keen to add more shops. U tell me where theirs wastage in your local I’ll put them on for you! We’ve got so much media attention I want to see how we can add value to the group and give you guys the deals close to you.

  • FYI, just to calirfy it’s one premium pie at pie tin for $2.90 not a box as disucssed via concrete playground. The support from concrete playground has been great but a bit more research and usage on the app would be even better but I guess they had to rush to get the story out since we became flavour of the week. The channel 10 news is a bit more accurate,
