No cheap 5G data then.

Maybe we need another GOC dupe NCNco (National Cellular Network) for 5G

“The security of 5G networks will have fundamental implications for all Australians, as well as the security of critical infrastructure, over the next decade,”

Well, I guess there won't be any threats to the security of our 5G networks if we just don't have any 5G networks….

    • there are still other multiple options keeping competition alive when it comes to 5G.

There are other options, but banning ZTE and Huawei does absolutely nothing for competition (which requires more than one option). Right now… who else is putting their hands up for the 5G build out other than Telstra?

        • optus definitely, and VHA probably following soon. and there are multiple vendors that they all can choose from.

  • The Chinese can Access/force Hauwei under law to provide info etc.

    • Not really. The holy grail of IT security is physical access. The Australia govt can (and absolutely should) mandate that all hardware for maintaining, administering and managing the network is kept on Australian soil. Hell - they could mandate that a separate Australian company be trained and hired to do any and all hands-on management of the network, and while auditing code isn't easy, it's definitely possible.

      • China's 2017 national intelligence law.

The regulations demand that "any organisation or citizen shall support, assist, and cooperate with state intelligence work".

        • Oh yeah - legally they absolutely can and will try. Physically it's a different story if everything is here in Australia.

  • No cheap 5G data then.

How do you know? These companies are accused of gathering data for the Chinese government. Even if it isn’t true you don’t get accusations like that for no reason.

I’m sorry but how well has the NBN been rolled out. I’d give them a 1/10

"not for no reason" isn't the same as "for a valid reason". Everything from xenophobia, to protectionism, to wanting to show solidarity with the US are all possible, but utterly invalid, reasons for this.

And anyway - so long as the hardware is on Australian soil, there are a tonne of options to ensure that nothing dodgy happens, no matter who you go with.

The other non-Chinese options to build the 5G network are Nokia and Ericsson. Almost all of their 5G equipment is manufactured in China as well.

To the question of backdoors, whats to say that Nokia/Ericsson don't have backdoors in them - the number of times Cisco has been caught out finding default passwords and backdoors.

  • This has got nothing to do with national security and has everything to do with selling. The Chinese will have to buy 51% stake in the companies allowed to take part. Sweet money in someone’s deep pockets. If they had any national pride at all, they wouldn’t have moved the manufacture and electronics production overseas.
