  • Paying for a gaming news site doesn't seem right

    • lol, not even close

    • -6

We have reddit / twitter / youtube not entirely sure how this is a deal.

      • And this is none of that, aside from swimming in the pool of 'video games', GB is a vastly different beast to those platforms sharing little in common.

You aren't there for the news, lets say.

        • -5

I find it strange to pay for this sort of stuff I can get for free from many many many different platforms, this is cool if you love the team behind this mob but that's about all the reason you would pay for this.

        • +1

@Jetship: Newsflash: sometimes people like to pay for the content they enjoy, and be able to see them make more of it. In an internet full of freeloaders, cheapasses, and entitled whiny toerags, it's good to be able to support quality, original content though a small monthly fee, or a smaller total yearly fee.

    • +1

It's not news, it's video content. And it's very good, a huge cut above the usual Youtube stuff. The premium fee allows them to do cool shit without being beholden to advertisers or terrible toxic communities. Plus Jeff Gerstmann is a national treasure :)

I listen to their giant bombcast and it's alright, there's plenty of others though that are equally as good. Each to their own but I wouldn't pay for it, it's damn expensive as well. Seems like I've started a negging war here though with my comment lol.

        • What other ones do you listen to that you enjoy as much? I've tried a few (Kinda Funny, Superbestfriendscast, EasyAllies) and bounced off most of them.

        • @LaTerrible: kinda funny, destructoid, PlayStation blogcast, ign pubcast and for general media fun Fatman on Batman.

        • @LaTerrible: Been watching the Superbestfriendcast since episode 1. Love those guys

You can listen to their podcasts free if you don't mind their ads. Their ads are kinda entertaining anyway, so I don't mind them. They personalize each ad every week so you're not listening to the same spiel.

I like the Bombcast. It's not as funny as it was when Vinny and Ryan were around unfortunately. The Beastcast I'm less a fan of. Too much of their political views bleed into their cast, and I don't like when that happens.

GB unfortunately don't do many reviews. And I don't have time to watch their quicklooks which are anything but quick.

If you're a fan of watching people play games, you'll like it. But I don't do that. I'd rather be playing it myself.

@lostn: Regarding watching people play games I'm the same, I think that's a thing for my son's age group. I can't understand it myself.

I encourage anyone who doesn't know who Giantbomb is to try their free content! Listening to them really reignited a passion for the gaming industry that I hadn't felt in years.

    • I listen to a couple of their podcasts.

    • +1

Same here to be honest, they're such a refreshing antidote to the awful toxicity in a lot of gaming communities.

Sorry, I'm too old to be in here, stumbled in by mistake!

    • +2

Never too old for quality gaming content friend. One of the things people like about GB is the average age of the staff is well over 30, definitely skews more mature although the have their share of silliness of course.

It's a website about video games. I highly recommend it.

I've been a premium member since it started and it's been worth every cent, plus more.

This ain't your memeing, yelling, YouTube quick cut garbage that all the other sites are. This is real entertainment.

  • Yeah, not paying money to watch a bunch of middle age men talk about video games. I don't care how quality you think it is.

    • +1

Lol you again, you were carrying on about this last GB sale. Jog on, no one cares about your idiotic, uninformed "opinions".

I've signed up for the free trial. I haven't checked Giant Bomb in years, I usually read Kotaku/IGN.

Where's the content though? There's been 4 game reviews this year, the last in April. Only 5 news stories this month (3 of those are community spotlights).

Is it just premium videos and podcasts? I can't keep up with my current podcasts as it is, and I've always preferred to read gaming news (which now that I think about it is pretty weird for something that's so visual).

I haven't had a proper look because I'm in China on the worlds slowest hotel wifi, so I'll check it out closer on the weekend when I'm back home, but at the moment I'm unconvinced.

    • +2

They don't do many reviews (plenty of those out there already), and they cover news on their podcasts. Their work is almost all video. That's their niche.

    • Their reviews are their quicklooks, combined with the countless other places they pop up across each week to talk shop about games.
